Polygroupit from paint not working properly

I just upgraded to 2020 a few days ago.

When I was using 2018, “polygroupit from paint” gave me solid polygroups with edges based on the lines I had drawn.

In the 2020 version, It gives me stray small polygroups all over ( or doesn’t separate parts into separate groups.

I’m painting the border with no pen pressure on a standard brush, and have tried it on models with different polygon densities. (As well as thicker/thinner brush widths)

I have also tried “merge similar groups” and “merge stray groups” with no avail.

Advice?

Hello @Remi

I was unable to easily reproduce your results. In 2020.1.4, the most up to date version of the program (make sure you’re using it), this works with fairly minimal effort, both with the Masking > From Polypaint function, and the Polygroupit from Paint function:

painttogroups

Remember, the Polygroupit function is designed to work with white and black paint. Make sure your white is completely white, and your black is completely black, not simply a dark shade of another color. Minimize partial shading with maxed out RGB intensity and no falloff. In the case of the From Polypaint masking command, be sure to set the PTolerance slider to a minimum value. Try increasing the resolution of your mesh, so your lines are clearly drawn with 100% value polygons, and not a thin cluster of faintly colored polygons.

thank you for the response!

Rookie mistake on my part—
I was working on an assymetrical model, and deleting the opposing side, or mirror and welding beforehand fixed the issue.

(I asked here since I had found a few reddit threads with the same fraying issue on the borders)
