Please Recommend zbrush 3 training dvds in order of how good they are!

Hi. I see a lot of training material from gnomon, digital tutors, kurv and more. Can somebody rank them for me? I’d like to buy some, but there really are a lot to choose from.
Thanks,
Jarrett

Would suggest go by author.
Certain ones post here, you can check their work
If you haven’t heard or can’t research the author, it might
even be me:D

Would suggest:

  1. Alex Alvarez
  2. Meats Meir
  3. Scott Spencer.

Would also suggest Gnomon as the dealer of selection.

Did Alex Alvarez do commercial videos? if so, who carries them?

to add to the list i would say Zack Petrocs stuff is great also if you really need understanding on realistic anatomy. his gnomon workshop stuff and the video he did for gnomonology on female anatomy is good also cant say enough good things about all the stuff i have learned from his training dvds and videos hes definitly one of the people that make great training dvds i recomend him if you would like integrate realistic anatomy into your sculpts.
hope that helps you a little and gives you kind of an idea. here are the sites to his training for gnomon http://www.thegnomonworkshop.com/dvds/groups/instructors/3d/petroc_g.html and for gnomonology http://gnomonology.com/inst/17

for alex alvarez these are some of the dvds that you can buy from gnomon http://www.thegnomonworkshop.com/dvds/groups/instructors/3d/alvarez_g.html yeah he is actualy head of gnomon i think his actualy one of the first zbrush dvds i ever bought wad his head texturing dvd for zbrush 2 http://www.thegnomonworkshop.com/dvds/aal01.html

meats meier has alot of good dvds as well for begining to end you cant beat his dvds he was one of the first beta testers to use zbrush so he knows his way around the application http://www.thegnomonworkshop.com/dvds/groups/instructors/3d/meier_g.html

scott spencer has some videos also on gnomonology that cover displacment maps and normal maps and useing them in maya or another render like mental ray or any render engines that are capable of useing normal maps and displacement maps heres his videos http://gnomonology.com/inst/18

these are just some of the top people i can think of hope this helps you some but one i do recomend if you are completly new meats intro to zbrush 3 it will really help get you up and running and get you into the program A-Z he has a lot of expereince. I think that should help you some.

IMHO it is impossible to rank them if you do not state what your intentions are. I’d go for the Meats Meier DVD’s if you need a thorough and precise introduction and some guidance into the intermediate level. Other DVD’s which came across my desk are often more focussed on the integration of ZBrush and other packages or the use for a particular purpose. You will not go wrong with Meat’s DVD’s.
Cheers
Rainer

Aren’t we being tacky today:D

Other DVD’s which came across my desk.

Have a mental image of you sitting at your desk and a
truck pulls up, back drops, and about 100 dvds come
spilling out, burying you in a sea of Gnomon.

LOL. USPS… beep beep beep. Gotta run… more coming!
Rainer

PS:A sea of Gnomon… THAT does not sound right… eeeeeeeek!
PPS: The fulfillment cost of the Gnomon DVD’s is expensive… I never liked that.

the Gnomon DVD’s is expensive… I never liked that

Agree except for…

A few months ( maybe years) ago there wasn’t that much available
about zbrush.
Took a chance and purchased “Head Sculpting and Texturing” by
Alvarez from Gnonmon. Expensive, yes.
However.

  1. DVD dealt with Zbrush and small ( one lesson) reference to Maya.
The reference to Maya in the dvd, admittedly, might make one
hesitate if they did not have the program. But the way Alvarez used
it, it was possible to substitute another program and do about the same things.
One value to me was to show the creation and application of all the
types of maps ( normal, displacement, specular) that zbrush does so well.
  2. Alex Alvarez is, as a job, a teacher. This cannot be overlooked.
His way of explaining things is simple and effective.
Have one dvd by one of the “artists” and you have to strain to understand
what he is saying and to understand what he is demonstrating.
  3. Alvarez also uses zbrush to make a living ( in conjunction with other
programs). I have noticed lately tutorials for sale by people who
were asking questions about the program, weeks ago:lol:
  4. In the past few weeks, have purchased two of his online tutorials
  5. The Making of Smile
  6. The Making of Trin
Also purchased the dvd series “Jester” and “Introduction to Maya”
Have not started “Jester” yet, it the longest and will take some time.
( Shows you how I am going to spend the Winter)
In any case, each purchase was a followup to the one before.
Each was well worth what I paid for it and could not wait for the next.
This does not happen that often.
  7. Do not forget the quality of the product also.
Gnomon DVD’s are ones that you can hear what the instructor is saying.
There are no dropouts, mumbling belching or sneezing.
Also in the case of one of the downloaded tutorials, I had
deleted one of the chapters by accident, called their support
team and they could not have been nicer about helping me.
( try to get certain places by phone…)
  8. Agree with one of the previous threads. Meat’s dvd’s are great for
beginners. But one major thing I disliked, is that it dealt with
3.0. Had purchased the dvd and spent days with it.
Then they came out with 3.1, and I felt that I was starting from scratch.
I was wrong but the feeling still is there, that is isn’t about the Zbrush
    I have now.

To sum up my opinion, are Gnomon DVD’s expensive? Yes.

Are they worth it? To me decidedly yes!!!

I was only referring to the ‘fulfillment cost’ as in shipping handling and so on. The subcontractor they use is EXPENSIVE. But is it worth it? YES.

You mentioned quality. And in that context I must agree that the Gnomon DVD’s are excellent. Not only the technical aspect, but also the editing is great. Meats for example spends a lot of time to compress and speed up certain modeling parts to prevent that you sleep in in front of the screen and thus maes the best of the time of the viewer. No 20 minutes to bend a nose into shape there.

Right now I am watching a movie about oxy acetylene cutting and welding… You don’t know about a good source for aluminum plate 6016 1/2inch around here do you?! Less than 4$ per pound if possible… I am starting to collect AL can’s in the neighborhood and am catching strange looks as they don’t know that I have a small foundry 8)))))). They think that I am now completely down to the dogs…

Cheers
Rainer

Lemo…don’t you mean 6061?

Misunderstood “fulfillment cost”, thought it was something like
alimony:cool:

(ouch!!!)

Of course… 6061… I broke down and bought plate yesterday for 4$/lbs. I can get it for 3.50 but have to add s&h which makes it more than 4$. Need more can’s. That will yield something ‘unlike’ 6061 but for free (except propane). And of course, I can only cast about a square foot. Which is ok for what I need it.
To bad we are not Neighbors Pride 8). I am sure you have a nice place for a cupola 8).
Rainer

PS:LOL # BIC… fulfillment/alimony hahaha

Have to ask.

When you are scouring the neighborhood for cans:

  1. Ever questioned by police.
  2. See anyone naked.
  3. Tempted to pick up bottles for deposit.
  4. Chased by dogs.
  5. Chased by husbands
  6. Chased by wifes
  7. Offer candy to the little ones
  8. Peek in windows.
  9. Been tempted to dress “scantily”
  10. See an article of furniture and thought “That would look good in the…”
  11. Try to get gas out of a neighbors tank
  12. Wonder what is in some of those large bags.
  13. Wear a mask.
  14. Gotten more nearsighted
  15. Seen Brittany around.

Since you started this, has the wife and kids ignored you when
you went outside. Sort of…never seen him in my life before.

Seriously (?) I have been looking for a hobby that would take
me outside. Picking up cans in the neighborhood?
Hmmmmm!!! Idea has merit.

Apologies Jarrett Towe, what was the question again?

Remember about a week ago jarrett towe asked a question about DVD’s…
