Please critique my lumpy ogre (no innuendo meant)

I’m sure you hear this all the time “Hey, check out my lumpy ogre” or “please take a look at my wrinkled troll”. Yep- I am one of the many here with a naked muscled man- and I’m not afraid to ask you to stare long and hard at him.

Okay- enough staring. What I need are critiques for this WIP. Eventually I hope to cloth this guy (yes, check it out now while you still can). Don’t worry- he will only being wearing a fashionable animal skin around his waist, and some nifty leather boots. The boots and cloth will be added in Maya (hopefully). I think I will mirror the details one last time on him- then go in and randomize it. I appreciate your critiques now at this crucial stage.

Hi Craig,

Pretty cool modeling, very well done :+1:

I’m not gonna mention the proportions because obviously you want a sort of a “pin head” and that’s fine with me.
But there are 2 things that I imagine you can easyly fix.

  1. The head: It seems to be separate from the body. I think if you make the base of the neck a bit “chunkier” it will come together. Another thing could be that the face and the head have a very specific proportion within it in contrast with the body -just my opinion ;)-

  2. The feet: Just don’t forget to work on them too

Keep on going man :+1:

Hey it looks good. I like.
You can tell you know what you are doing.
The one thing that stands out is the head/neck. Most people will probably say it is too small but I think the size is ok. You can get away with the odd proportions with these fantasy characters. The issue I have is the neck muscles. With their small size it makes the head look stuck on and not really integral to the design. With that muscular of a frame this guy is not going to really have a neck. The head should almost be nestled in the muscles to look “correct”.
Do this. Go to comicartcommunity.com and look in the gallery and search for all the Hulk pics. He often is drawn with a tiny head on a massive frame and they work the neck and trapezius pretty well.
Or even look up some pics of Brock Lesnar. He has no neck and the musculature could be useful in this situation.

Thank you for the crits- keep them coming. I appreciate the insight about the neck- I didn’t even see that until now. That can be the problem playing with proportions- you may not have to follow the rules- but you need to make it look some how “right”.

One thing about the feet- they ofcourse aren’t done. The plan is to put some details at the top that look like the top of a leather skin “sock”. In other words- imagine that the feet are actually covered in a second skin now- just I haven’t put the detail in that will separate them. If that doesn’t make sense- then believe that I know they need to be finished- but feel free to keep giving crits.

Thank you for your insight- more to follow sooner or later.

Craig

I hope your going to keep posting your updates as its going to be interesting to see how this guy evolves, I agree with the above posts that the neck needs a tinkering, but your orger has major potential. keep going. :+1:

It’s grotesque… it’s great! I agree, this could be a great character. Keep us posted! :+1:

What would be SICK, is if the head and neck were attatched to a Dwarf buff dude…Then you could, open a hatch in the “neck/shoulder” area, and the Dwarf buff dude could climb out, and WREAK HAVOK!!!

sweet

closeUp.jpg Okay- it may not look like much- but I redid the proportions a bit and added new details. More neck work- shorter but thicker legs- larger detailed hands- etc… I want to add a few more details to the head and then add some clothing.

Once again- please give critiques.

Good character. Well done anatomy.

…Make the dwarf!!! It would be sick. Very nice model, how do you make the texture on his legs? Its a bit to much I think but still how do you made it?

Nice idea btw

Nice modelling. I know it`s not finished but my only crit would be on the design itself. It looks unbalanced.By that I mean, you have a strange mix of anatomy going on. Very pumped up upper body and then the rolls of fat around the feet, and maybe the head is a tad to small. Not working for me. Also maybe carry on the detail from the shoulders into the head and lower body a bit to tie it all in. Again though, great modelling! J

I like him. I know it’s an artistic vision thing, but I find his head is way too small, and the smallness takes away from his intimidation factor. He has a great musculature and anatomy, though. I’d make a version with a proportionally sized head, just so compare the two.

This is an awesome model man. I really like the proportions because this guy could be thrown into any fantasy setting and work well. As far as your head to body problem goes, if I were you I would tone down the subsidiary muscle definition to where your major muscles like the sternoclydomastoid muscle are dominate and then load them up with veins and such to give definition in that manner. You dont have a lot of major muscle definition in the rest of the model (in terms of showing the tendons and ligaments as well as muscle) so I wouldn’t focus on them in the neck area either. Just start accentuating the veins in this guy and watch him pop. Look to pictures of body builders and rather large muscular people and get your definition based off of what those guys look like because this guy would definately follow that flow. Keep up the good work man!

this is the kind of concept I always favoured. its not the style alone, it is the fresh and eyecatching originality that stuns the view. keep up, looking forward where it goes!

cheers

cool suff man! good move to shorten the legs. Looks like its coming along fine :+1:

Wow- some crits. Thanks everyone for the kind words- here are my thoughts on the critiques.

Im: thank you

Wim: no Dwarf. I used projection master on the legs. Over the last few months I’ve been building a library of skin and texture samples- these I believe are from some alphas I made from rhino skin.

avatarsw: I realize this character is out of proportion- and I’m trying to make it work, but I don’t want to make him “normal”. The fat on the feet isn’t fat. Its hard to envision at this point- but he will be wearing boots- the feet are the model of the boot without the seperation (to be done in Maya). Maybe a couple of warts and veins added to the legs will help?

meanboythecat: I might post an image of him with a larger head- but personally I don’t like the look. THe head has grown some since I started this- but I know some folks will never forgive the pin head thing.

Jigsaw2211982: good idea

froyd: thank you

MrLearner: thank you too.

Looks like I got some things to consider- and some new directions to maybe follow. Thank you all for your help,

Craig

Great work. The only suggestion I would have is make the neck/back/shoulder connections more triangular vs. “very wide” and then “very thin”.

The look, especially the folds where you intend to put boots, is exceptional though.

Thanks for the crit xixaxAP. Do you mean make the connecting areas more sharp and coming to a point? I’m not sure if I understand exactly.
