hey I’m new to brush and all digital programs and I’m stuck. I accidentally hit “exit edit mode” with a tool. when I clear the canvas and try to copy it, it seems to have lost detail unless you scale it much larger than the original. It still has the metal in it, but it gets more pixelated the smaller you scale it. how do I get back to normal edit mode and keep working?
You’re zooming the canvas rather than scaling the model. That’s just like zooming an image in Photoshop.
Click the Actual button to the right of the canvas to return to 100% zoom. You then need to have your model in Edit mode – right now in your screen shot, the model has been snapshot which means it’s pixols rather than polygons. So clear your canvas, draw the model and then immediately press T to enter Edit mode. Your cursor will turn from white to red. At that point you can use the Move, Zoom3D and Rotate buttons to the right of the canvas to manipulate the model. There are also keyboard shortcuts for this.
This will help: http://docs.pixologic.com/getting-started/basic-concepts/2d-and-3d-navigation/ and section 3 of http://docs.pixologic.com/user-guide/keyboard-shortcuts/shortcuts-by-category/

I tried that already, it still is less quality when I try reopening it and hitting the edit key. If you’re relating it to Illustrator, it seems to have shrunk my artboard somehow after exiting edit mode. so when I redraw it to the same size compared to the artboard, it looks low res. Is there a way I can enlarge the “artboard”? I took the pic like that to show how it gets worse in resolution the smaller you go and I already know how to get it back into edit mode.
Is there a possibility that the program has a default to save low res tools in the trial version? Is it the trial version that’s doing it maybe?
What you are showing is very clearly the product of canvas zooming rather than model scaling. They are not interchangeable.
Under normal circumstances, you should not resize your canvas.
If you want a larger canvas space, do this before you draw your model and enter Edit mode. Enlarging the canvas is done through the Document palette. You can even click the button there to set your current canvas as your startup document. So for example, you could double your canvas size so that it more than fills the screen, then save that as your startup document so that it’s always that size when you launch ZBrush.
After you have drawn your model on the canvas and entered Edit mode, DO NOT use the top set of buttons next to your canvas – the ones that zoom your canvas view. You’ll get pixelation every time. ALWAYS use the keyboard shortcuts to scale your model, or use the lower set of buttons to the right of the canvas.
When you save your work, either use Tool >> Save As to save the model itself or File >> Save As to save all of your current Tools, your document settings and more. Do not use Document >> Save As since this will only save a 2.5D snapshot of the model rather than the 3D data.
