I know it may sound funny-photoshop4-but that is all I have at the moment and have only just started to play with it.
My question is - How to colour line art with out colouring over the scanned lines?
And how do you get all the lovely smooth shading you see as if the artist hade used a airbrush and compresor on a big board?

As far as the coloring in, I use the the “Magic Wand Tool” to pick up the white. Set the tolerance very tight.
I then use "layer fill - gradient to start.
Go back with the “airbrush” and set very low opacitys for oversprays.

wow, trying hard to remember how i worked in the pre-layers-area … ps4 doesnt have layers, right?
if you want to colorize line art or anything greyscale, i’d simply paint away on the a copy of the scanned image, overlaying colors with any tool you want (using the airbrush tool at very low intensity settings should give you the effect and amount of control you want) and once in a while, i’d copy/paste the originial scan in multiply or overlay mode… i’m not too sure of the process tho’ … maybe you have to use the apply image or calculations thing to do that … using layers changed my workflow completely, and v4, well, it’s some time since then. probably i’d even prefer paintshop7 anyway.

There are a couple different ways to do that. I’m not too sure about version 4, but here’s one way to do it:
If your scanned image is the background, drag the background in the layer control to the create new layer icon, copying that layer. Then hide the copy. Color away, using brushes, airbrushes, or whatever suits you, NOT worrying about the black lines. Then un-hide the background copy, covering all your color work up. Change the layer mode to “Darken”, and your black lines are all back where they belong, and all the white paper from the copy will be transparent.
