“Petni” (পেত্নী in Bengali) is a term deeply rooted in Bengali folklore and rural Indian mythology, especially in West Bengal, Bangladesh, and parts of Assam.
The word “Petni” generally refers to the ghost or spirit of a woman who died an unnatural or tragic death — often before marriage, during childbirth, or after facing injustice or betrayal.
Bhoot Chaturdashi is an annual festival that falls on the 14th day of the dark fortnight in the Ancient Hindu calendar month of Kartik.

On this night both good and evil souls roam the earth.
