Perspective Button won't turn on

Hello, I searched posts but didn’t find my question…I’m doing an exercise in the book by Eric Keller (from 2008), and it says to select the 3D Ring tool, and make sure the Perspective button is active in the Draw Palette. But it won’t even give me the option of turning it on, nothing happens when I click. I tried drawing the ring first, but it still doesn’t show up.

Before when I was working with a cylinder, the button would click on and off, but when I clicked it on, the cylinder would just disappear. Any ideas on what’s the deal with this button?

Thanks, and happy Thanksgiving!

P.S. I just started moving and rotating and scaling the 3D Ring, and then the Perspective button became clickable, but when I turned it on, the ring disappears like the cylinder was doing. Hmmmm, is it disappearing behind my background or something for some reason?

After drawing out a tool you need to hit “T” to enter Edit mode. Perspective is meaningless and impossible without that condition being true.
