Panel loops is smoothing my borders (edges)

Hi,

Been having trouble with panel loops. I have this object that I divided in two poly groups. When I use the panel loops option, due to me wanting to have a nice “robotic” structure to it, the “cut” looks great but somehow the edges of my whole object get smoothed too.

Is there any way to prevent this from happening? I want the cut but not the smoothing on my whole object.

When I turn the smoothing down, the cut is very “hard” and “jacked”. It looks horrible.

My model already has a fairly high amount of poly’s to work with.

Hope someone can help me out.

Hi @Fanatic ,

It would be useful to be able to see the situation in question in order to make recommendations, but generally you should be able to hide the polygroup you don’t want to be affected then perform Panel Loops on the visible portion. The hidden portion should be unaffected by any smoothing. The status of the “Append” and “Double” buttons will have a significant impact on your results.

Keep in mind that Mesh Extracts are a non-destructive alternative that provides similar results to Panel Loops in many situations.

Yeah, good point. Sorry for that.

I will add a recording or screenshot later tonight!
