Painter and Photo Shop help

When I fire up painter and I have set my screen up how I want it I saved the settings but when it is closed then re-opened the set up is back to the old way.So I have gone in and picked the screen set up that was previosly saved but still nothing.
And with Photo Shop is there a way to save the settings?

This is what I want but…

This is what I get when I start the program again.Any ideas?

Photo Shop is the same
This is what I want but once again …

And again this is what I get when re started. Can any one help?

What operating system? These kinds of settings are supposed to stay without any special savings. However, if you have an operating system the restricts permissions (Win NT, Win 2000, Win XP(?)), then you may have a permissions issue with the preference file.

I have not seen this happen too much, but it may be happening here…

Hey Kaz I am using Windows ME.Does that help any?

With photoshop go to Edit>Preferences>General in the large Option box there is a checkbox for “Save Palette Locations”

As for painter that is a bit of a mystery. Even if you save it in the Window menu and then select it you say nothing happens? Sounds like a preference file could be corrupted or something. Personally I find the painter palettes are just too big. You can assign an F key for anything and call up palettes when you need them. Also you can make custom palettes but I find the F key method works well.

I’ve just had a close look at your screenshots but what you get and what you want are the same, so I am not sure what your problem is.

The only thing that has changed is the location of the new document. But that is not a pallete. New documents always open up in the top left.

Thanks thelonious. That is exactly what I was after. So I cant save my screen to stay where I want it - so it doesn’t open to the left?

And also how do you set actions to the ‘F’ keys in painter?

Edit>Preferences>Function Keys. You can select items from the menu bar or from the menu in the palettes. I find this better than making a custom palette. Also note that you can drag the hierachy of palette items to re order them.

If you are a photoshopper you should know now that the Visibility Mask which is associated with each layer in Painter pretends to be a layer mask. However it is not, it is system level code to make preserve transparency work, it should not be available to the user to play around with. As a consequence it is completed stuffed, it will drive you mad, it doesn’t work. So don’t bother with it. Photoshop also has a visibility mask but it is hidden. I mention this because I spent many many hours trying to work out the Painter vis mask before I twigged.

BTW in painter on the controls palette you can add custom buttons. Do this in the Brushes Palette under Control>custom controls.
