Organic texturing

Hi.

Would it be somewhat accurate to say, in terms of texturing 3D models, that zbrush/texturemaster is more suited to working with organic models rather than things like a space ships, where one needs to paint straight lines, hard edges, fine detail like wires, pipes, conduits, greebles (a 3dmax term), etc are predominant.

(I think that was a run on sentence)

Also, I have to envy those that have mastered Zbrush. I just can’t get the hang of it. It’s somewhat akin to my grandfather trying to use the VCR to record his favorite show.

ZBrush has no trouble with straight lines, thanks to the Line Stroke type. You can also get a variety of other shapes by using the DragRectangle stroke with an alpha, or using the Stencil with either the default French Curve or with an alpha of your choice.

ZBrush is also capable of creating things like wires in very short order. This Tutorial shows an example of that, along with a mechanical type of design. By combining ZBrush with Photoshop, I was able to get results that would have taken MUCH longer in Photoshop alone. And what’s more, even the initial alpha could actually have been done in ZBrush.

ZBrush allows you to actually texture with 3D shapes. This allows you to quickly create items such as rivets, ***** heads, wires, and a whole lot more for inclusion in a mechanical texture, and then have them look “3D real”. Just use the Pick Shaded option instead of Pick when working with TextureMaster (be sure to follow the instructions from the TextureMaster tutorial to avoid darkening of the texture as you use Pick Shaded).

The bottom line is that ZBrush is great for all kinds of texturing, whether organic or mechanic.

Ok, thanks.

I make 3d models in 3d max. I hear that you can import 3d models and texture them in a 3D wysiwyg fashion in zbrush. I guess that’s what texture master is all about.

Sure

Wires, pipes and conduits are a breeze in ZBrush. It just takes a little time to understand that you are not using a traditional 3D polygonal or nurb modeller

veeeeeery nice picture southern!!!

Hey zathras, welcome to ZBC! You are not alone if ZBrush doesn’t click all at once  … it just takes a little time, patience, study and playing around

One of the first things to master is the Transform palette’s commands and their shortcuts (Q W E R T, see manual) … also Shift-S for “snapshotting” or duplicating a 3d tool

Hover the mouse pointer over palette items and press the Ctrl key for the popup help

For spaceships, have a look at the 3d tools section of the manual (the manual for v1.23 is still relevant) … especially how settings in Tools:Modifiers and Tools:Initialize can affect the basic shape

Learn how to use markers and the Multimarker tool to build up greebles from primitive 3d tools, and then save them as Z tools for use in other projects

For painting the ship’s name and registry number or whatever, you can load black-and-white bitmaps into the Stencil tool

Best wishes,

Kevin
