orc origins WIP

…Orcs, the footsoldiers of the enemy… It is said that they were in origin corrupted Elves captured by Melkor before the beginning of the First Age…

In the Elder days it is suggested that the Diabolus subjugated and corrupted some of the earliest Elves. ( Letters of Tolkien , no.153 )”

SO…after a couple of lines of copying and pasting,
what i am trying to do here is to find out how could an elf transform into an orc…how would he look like while during transition? How could beauty turn into disgust without losing all of its elements at once?
The essence that i am trying to capture is the decay of a heroic figure.
I am posting a first WIP image…and a very lazy paintover of how i see my character evolving.

All comments are more than welcome…Strict critique as well;)
thanks in advance

UPDATE
nobody said anything bad so i only made a few minor adjustments on my model.(Closed mouth, king leonidas scar, smaller jaw…) Also i put a base layer of texture…I will sculpt details using Ryan Kinglien’s technique as shown in Zclassrooms so i’m gonna have to focus on the texturing process now…

BTW the model is made from zpheres and this is my first WIP posted here.
So far i was just doodling with zbrush, inflating and smoothing things for no apparent reason…just getting familiar with the program…

P.S since no news is good news i hope that no comments are good comments as well

OK…done with the detailing.
I guess i am done with the sculpting part unless anyone has anything to add …I am going to re-texture this from scratch cause i got the gap-in-the-middle texture from the Ken Brilliant mapping technique…anyway…next is texturingand then off to 3dmax for some cloth simulation, hair and rendering…
As for the texturing part, i still haven’t figured out if i want the skin to fade to an orcish shade from its original healthy color OR if the orc shade should spread from that nasty cut on his eye…

I felt like playing around with the lighting and the shader of the scene instead of making the other props…
Skin is SSS fast skin and the scene is lit with an area light and a spot.(GI and FG are on).
The texture is just a base so far…
Poly count is 100k with no displacement.(ZTL was 1.167.000)
Comments?

Looks like you’ve been having fun with this! Nice sculpting and surface detailing. I can imagine you’ll enjoy adding some nasty texture detail to his scar.

I wonder if his ears need a bit more work? It looks as if you just pulled out a ring of polys … there’s no internal structure (helix, antihelix etc).

On the aesthetic side, he looks somewhat handsome for an orc and bit happy too. Of course, that may be deliberate. Just calling it as I see it.

Keep going … very promising. :+1:

Hey Moochie!
you are my first poster ever…I guess this makes us Zbrushies for life now…haha
you read me like an open book btw on the “having fun issue” with this model.
This is my first real attempt to make something worth spending some time on and i am really enjoying it! (so far)
As for the stuff you pointed out:The ears do have inner structure (at least a basic one) but you can’t see it due to the camera angle.
I am glad that you saw some beauty on him…After all this is an elf turning into an orc,and elves are hotties!
The fact that you saw him " a bit happy" got me thinking though since i don’t have such intention.I want him to have some elven pride still in him (i thought i could achieve that with the “chins-up” pose ) but not happy…I’ll look into it

And as for the scar…---->[elf2orc_scar.jpg]

AAAAAAAAAAAND… after falling flat on my face during the export-to-max-displacement-map-process (which i will not go into right now) i decided to export the 25k version without any disp and do things as we did before zbrush…paint on the UVs…
So, i made my diffuse, bump and spec maps and here is what i got.Rendered with SSS fast skin in max with 3 point lighting…

So,next time i will post my finished image since i am taking this into 3dsmax now…I don’t know if it is makes any sence showing progress here while working on 3dsmax,or if it is fair…I am still open for comments though as always

BTW,can somebody please tell me what is the most reliable thread on zbrush-max workflow? i have tried EVERYTHING and i am getting all sorts of problems.mostly dull displacements(although i pay attention to the disp map depth and problem with seams.THANKSSSSSSS

The most reliable zbrush to max workflow I’ve found so far is to use VRay and the VRay displacement modifier. Other than that you should probably make it a point to unwrap your uvs on your base mesh in max and be careful to hide the seams as this can be a major bane for displacements later. And to be clear that would probably mean doing your unwrap before you even touch the object in zbrush, as something, and don’t ask me how, because I don’t know, but something might change and zbrush may not recognise the base mesh as the same object when you re-import.

That’s the best I can do, and now I’ll just be watching your thread and hoping that someone can give you a better answer, because then I would know one.

Aaaaaand done…
I didn’t do much in Zbrush from a point and after but since i first posted this here i felt like i should post the final image as well…Just so i won’t leave any loose ends.
I won’t take any of your time…I know that Z3 is in everyone’s mind right now but i want to thank everybody for the inspiring work that it’s been posted here…and i want to share with everyone my joy for finishing my first project that involved ZBrush …yeeey!
