I wanted to poll the audience here to see what people have to say regarding base mesh creation.

I have only been working with Zbrush a short time and have decided that I prefer importing a base mesh from Maya.

My poll then would like to ask folks what method they prefer and why?

There are some great base meshes floating around these forums and the net in general that are offered free for any manner of use. I see no reason not to use them.

Otherwise, I like to start from primitives or zspheres, sculpt, quick re-topo, sculpt, and for a really high quality project do another touch-up re-topo before getting into the final pass of high-frequency detail. It’s a lot quicker than it sounds once you have the process down, and eliminates the need to determine all of the needs of your model before actually creating it.
