Old .ZPR files won't open!

Hello, I’m having an issue with my OSX edition of ZBrush. .ZPR Files that I created with ZBrush 4R6 P2 that are older than February or March of this year will not open. I am using the same version that was used to create them, on the same computer, and none of the files have been altered or moved since they were last saved. When I open them, I get this vague error message:

File Error

Error has been encountered while trying to load the file.
Loading has been aborted.

Please help, most of my sculpting portfolio is now unavailable, except exported .objs!!

If you still have 4R6, save out the zpr files as ztool files. The main reason .zpr files fail to open is the file size exceeds 4 gb. These files become very unstable and will not open. If you can open them in R6, save them out as a tool file instead.

How large are the .zpr files?

I have not updated Zbrush since the files were created; they were created in Zbrush 4R6, but now will not open in the same version of Zbrush. Additionally, my entire directory of zpr files older than march will not open, regardless of file size. Many are large, but the small ones will not open either.

Doug-- Some files are up to 500 MB, but most are >100 MB.

Edit: I looked through my files some more, and I can open ones that were created before September of last year, so only ones between Sept. 2014 and March 2015 are inoperable. I can’t think of what would effect those files in particular, as the only correlation is the time period. They are all different sizes, I didn’t upgrade or change Zbrush in that time period, I didn’t swap between computers or OSs, and if they were all somehow corrupted, the older files would be corrupted as well.

are they all the same projects, i mean certain projects won’t open, did you use a certain tool etc with them all, because i’ve had zbrush save tools that had something wrong with them and were then unopenable. it is rare though. and always good to save incrementally.
