brainplug - thx! yeah i had a great time with the bump map making all the wrinkles etc. 
Frenchy - i’ve been looking at this guys lines for so long i’m starting to see him everywhere! i think you’re right, mine’s strictly just copying - i’m not much of a designer… modeled it to a image plane then eyeballed all the details without going crazy.
junnykids -thanks! this is basically the mr fast skin shader. i left most of the settings at default, except the specular. then i plugged in colour maps for most of the attributes - diffuse, surface colour, subsurface colour, spec 1 and spec 2… i don’t have maya open so i don’t remember the names right now. i stuck a map in whereever i could
when i was making the colour maps, i copied the default colours from the shader and then started painting from there… i still can’t get my raytrace/or Dmap shadows to work. i think the sss shader might be tricky with shadows. not sure.
