old man model

hey everyone, just wanted to share my first piece. this is a study of an old guy using photo refs from 3d.sk. haven’t figured out how i’m going to texture this, originally i wanted to create a disp map and use it in maya for a game model (but the maps kept looking inverted). so i just grabbed some quick renders from zbrush.

anyway, thanks for all the inspiring work on this board!

wow, this is coming along really great!! Keep us updated on this!

hey, thanks for looking. i don’t really have time to keep going on it now… but i realize there’s much more to do. it was really just a learning experience.

hope to come back to zbrush in the future when i have time.

pretty good work, but i think you have problems with basic proportions

for example the eyes should be a lot lower… i add a photoshop of your image

Thats coming on fine .hope to see the end product of your project.keep on working on that .Good staff!!!

hi, you are right. thanks for the ps fix!

hey everyone, i finally went back to my first model to try and finish it off. i’ve just added sss fast skin shader in maya mr and now i’m working on developing the hair.

i’ve never tried for this level of detail before, so any crits welcome! i still have to figure out how to do soft shadows with raytrace and i want to redo the diffuse/occlusion map but aside from that, any feedback on real skin would be great.

thanks!

Great SSS shader. I haven’t found a SSS shader I am happy with in Maya.

The head looks great scoonie. If there is one thing the Zbrush is great for, its recreating the more ‘experienced’ among us. Nice work. Actually, I also subscribe to 3D.sk and I think I know which old guy you have used as a reference (which is a compliment btw ;))

Elixir: Have you not tried the sss fast skin shader? It is quite different to to the more ‘vanilla’ sss fast simple shader and has inputs for epidermal, subdermal etc. I would recommend it for characters if you haven’t used it already.

…of this one

Very nice!scoonie:)But can you tell me more about your 3s fast skin shader of this old man in maya? Thanks!!!

hey all, thanks for checking out my stuff…

brainplug - thx! yeah i had a great time with the bump map making all the wrinkles etc.

Frenchy - i’ve been looking at this guys lines for so long i’m starting to see him everywhere! i think you’re right, mine’s strictly just copying - i’m not much of a designer… modeled it to a image plane then eyeballed all the details without going crazy.

junnykids -thanks! this is basically the mr fast skin shader. i left most of the settings at default, except the specular. then i plugged in colour maps for most of the attributes - diffuse, surface colour, subsurface colour, spec 1 and spec 2… i don’t have maya open so i don’t remember the names right now. i stuck a map in whereever i could  when i was making the colour maps, i copied the default colours from the shader and then started painting from there… i still can’t get my raytrace/or Dmap shadows to work. i think the sss shader might be tricky with shadows. not sure.
