Ok folks, I need advice about getting a tablet!

Hi everyone. I am planning to give myself a Christmas Present this year. And I decided I need a tablet. But I have never worked with one before so I have no idea what is good and what is not. So any advice you could give me would be greatly appreciated. Also include the price range if you are making a suggestion please. I need easy to use as well.
Thanks!!!

I have a Wacom Intuos 4x5.
I don’t know enough to recommend one over the other. But this was a good buy for me.
In drawing hair in Photshop, for instance it hangs in.It also works well with Corel Painter 8 and Adobe Illustrator.
At the time if you were buying the tablet you received a tryout of Painter8
Installation and configuration were a snap and their website seems to offer a great deal of support.
I purchased it on sale through Amazon a few months ago, from what I recall at the time it was in the two hundred dollar range.
From what I gather there are different size tablets for different needs at different prices.
As I said,I am amateur and mine was a present to myself.
So far so good.
One underlining fact,if you do buy one ,this is the brand.

Hi Northstarr i have been working about 8 year with Wacom Tablet without problem and with a very tigh control of pressure and or line graph¡
Now you have the Intuos2 with different dimension 4x5(200$), 6x8(350$), 9x12…
Here is the link for WacomWacom Tablet Intuos2
Is a very nice tool.

i always wanted to have a tablet so i bought myself the wacom volito at the same time when i bought zbrush,it is a small one cause i wasnt sure if this is something for me and i wanted to test how it feels work with a pen and a tablet ,but now i have to say there is no better way to paint textures or model heads in zbrush and that i will buy the intuos2 9X12 for sure(when i have the money for it).my problem is that nearly everything costs more in germany(sometimes from 50.-dolllars up to 200.-dollars more).i often order my stuff directly from the company but some companys have very very very expensive shipping costs.

Hi,

I’ve used a Wacom (4 x 6) for the last six years with no real complaints (fussy drivers when I changed computers and operating systems, but all that was soon fixed by updates.)

This Christmas I bought early presents for relatives in the form of the $100.00 Wacom Graphire 3 tablet (4x5). It has a small but very adequate drawing area and comes with Photoshop Elements and Painter Classic as well as a cordless mouse that works on the tablet in place of the stylus. Oh, yeah - the stylus has 512 levels of sensitivity and the “eraser” device on the opposite end works with most software packages.

I’m seriously considering replacing my older Wacom with the Graphire 3 myself. If you want a small-footprint tablet that will do the job and won’t cost a fortune, check this one out.

visit the Wacom site for more info on all their tablets…

especially the Graphire… http://www.wacom.com/graphire/index.cfm

Donna, once you get one, you will wonder how you ever lived without it…

I think mine is a waacom graphire 4.5 or 6…plenty big enough to do the job and was reasonably priced at around 80 bux I believe at the time.

My first one was some off brand and was a piece of doo doo…

Let us know what you end up with and how you like it  Mine took me about five minutes to become comfortable with…I know you will just love it!!

Well, thank you all so much for your suggestions and experiences using a tablet. I see that there can be no question of the brand as you all were unanimous in that. The only thing that concerns me with a small one is that I am now working on some huge canvases and I wonder if a small tablet would have enough room to manipulate the stylis. But I expect it must since I am sure some of you have done some large canvas work before, right??
Anyhow thanks a bunch, I am off to the Wacom site to see what I can find…

Northstarr: even real biggies were no problem for the Intuos!! Had a big Wacom for some years, and never missed it usind the smaller Ituos!!

oh no! I found the exact tablet for me on the Wacom link you left for me to follow andreseloy, but alas I cannot purchase it from that site and the darn thing is on sale too! That site only sells to the USA, and I am in Canada. Waaaaaa!

I have been checking out Canadian sellers, and boy is it more expensive!! Think I will have to either wait for a sale, maybe after Christmas, or hopefully get some money for Christmas. Either way I will get one. And I will be sure to post anything that comes out using it that is worthwhile.

Thanks again guys!!

Wacom is the way to go don’t be tempted by the cheaper tablets. alot of them do NOT work on all applications. :stuck_out_tongue:

Hiya,

I use a wacom graphire. I’d like to have a larger tablet, but the price is right and I’m very tight for space.

Just be bloody careful with the stylus! I had to replace mine when the button broke (kids! %-0 ). $35!

hi north  im using a a4 size tablet from trust products, if u have the need of using a big one without spending too much i would recommend u this one, the pen weight isnt as good as wacom’s but the resolution characteristics are almost the same, check the link for info  I’m quite happy with it, still no problems and a big work area!

1200 WIRELESS TABLET / go to the products list there

Wacom

hahaha :stuck_out_tongue: no doubt! but i had no enough money

Donna as Ron will tell you most of my images was done with a mouse, then I got a small Wacom Graphite and I must say that for certain things it is fantastic. I have had no problems with it so far using it straight out of the box. I would say get one of your many friends in the states to buy it for you and post it to Canada.

Thanks DeeVee, I thought of that, but our customs are getting really difficult. I recently ordered some clocks from my own CafePress store. They weren’t too expensive, but it not only took 6 weeks to get here (held up at the border) it cost me half what they were worth in duties and taxes. No savings at all!! If I can’t find one in Toronto over the holidays, I may run over to Michigan when I get home, and see if there is an outlet there to get it. Then see if I can get back without a problem. They don’t usually search if you tell them you are coming home from the Casino (and of course you tell them you are going to the casino on your way in to the states). We will see!
And the saga continues!!!
