Object in viewport appears as if filled with flat colour, but it is basic material? [

Every once in a while, it happens, that my modelss turn to look like they are filed with flat colour material, but its filled with basic material. I dont get what is happening there. I think it has something to do with the rendering setting, but can not figure out what is causing the problem. When i render with the BPS Render, everyting looks good.
Does anybody know that problem an can help?
Thanks
Heiner

Maybe flat is selected here >> http://docs.pixologic.com/reference-guide/render/

Thanks Doug,
unfortunateley, that not it.
One more thing i noticed: In the material preview, all the previews are also getting a “flat” look.

The shadows make it look less flat, and more posterized (I would have initially said to check your Render: 3D Posterize settings, based on the screenshots alone, but that alone doesn’t seem to change the thumbnail). Then again the material might have its own posterize settings turned on.

It would be hard to find the culprit without seeing your full material settings, light settings, and render settings. You might need to start taking screenshots of your full ui and those specific subpalletes, or find a place to upload a sample project file where this is happening (maybe the .zli and .zmt as well just to be sure)

Do you have ZB4R5?

Hi there,
yes, i am using ZB 4R5.
Polstering, that was a good idea, and i nibbled my way trough all polstering settings i could find, but was not able to change anything (neither for the the better nor for the worse).
Then i filled the object again with the red clay material (using subtool master), which did not change the appearance, but at last, the object should be using the wax material after that procedure. But, when i use the picker from the material menu, it shows me, that the object is using the flat color material, despite the fact that i filled it with the wax material ???

I see, that a diagnosis from afar is not easy to do, therefore i prepeared a sample ZPR. I put that up for shareing, so if someone is interested you may download it here:

And besides: Thanks for helping me with this anoying problem!

There’s something odd going on here and I wasn’t able to find exactly what. However, I did manage to get things straight again. You need to follow the procedure exactly:

  1. Restart ZBrush.
  2. Load your project.
  3. Turn off Edit (hit T on the keyboard).
  4. Clear the canvas (Ctrl+N).
  5. Choose the PolyMesh3D (Star) tool in the Tool palette.
  6. Draw it on the canvas and turn on Edit mode (T).
  7. Now select your original model in the Tool palette. It will replace the Star on the canvas.
  8. Set Render>Render Properties>3D Posterize to 0 to remove the posterization.

Note: it is something to do with how Draw properties are stored with the ZTL. If you load up your project and turn off Edit you will see that RGB is off and Z Intensity set to 0, whereas RGB should be on and Z Intensity (and RGB Intensity) should be at 100. Usually correcting the settings is enough to put things right when going back to Edit mode but in this case it does not work.

HTH,

Thanks you all, especialy Marcus!
I had that problem every once in a while, and it was always a showstopper for me, at least i had to restart.
So, no matter how much of an workaround the solution is, it solves the problem, and so much thank you for that!
Best regards,
