obj import

i am trying to import an obj file into zbrush with all of the color, or paint, whatever you call it, that was made in another program. i have worked with zbrush for awhile but only in zbrush. i know how to import the model just without any of the color or detail. please help

as far as i know an obj’s color info is stored in a separate .mtl file which zbrush does not read.

if the obj has a texture, you can import that separately, apply it and then convert it into paint via “polypaint from texture” found in the polypaint menu. or after importing the texture, you fill the object with paint from the color menu.

in either case you likely will have to subdivide high enough to get a clean result.

Zeddie has the right idea. If I may add to it…
When you import an obj it may or may not have the UV with it and the UV is the important because it tells the texture how apply itself on the model.

I would ask you first… When you exported it did you include any UV data? If not, then you can create the UV’s first and then apply the texture like zEddie says. I like creating the UV’s in zBrush using UV Master.

When creating UVs in zBrush make sure you work on a clone, which UV master allows you to do and then ramp down your sub division levels to one deleting all high levels. Its only clone… Then copy the UV from the clone and then paste them to your real hi res model.
