Non-uniformally scaling a zsphere?

Hello there!!
I am modeling a hand (trying to at least) and I have the fingers, palm, forearm, etc. and it’s looking ok, however, the zsphere that’s the palm, cant be scaled down to reduce the chubby look of the palm. :frowning:

Is there any way to work around this? did I do something wrong? any help will be much appreciated.

Could you show your ZSphere structure?

A ZSphere cannot be told to add mass only in a certain direction. So a large ZSphere will produce a large volume. However, a different ZSphere arrangement that uses multiple ZSpheres can resolve much of your trouble. After that, it’s just a matter of sculpting the preview mesh to get more refined results.

If you use ZBC’s Search feature with “hands +ZSphere” as your search term you’ll find examples where other users have shared their configurations.

here it is, I was thinking just that, create an arrangment of zspheres which I can control much more acurretly, thx!!

Yeah, you definitely need to study how ZSpheres work a bit more. Your arrangement there has multiple ZSpheres connecting to the same “face” of their parent. It’s actually what I expected to see from your oringinal post.

Each ZSphere actually skins as a cube with six faces. You want only one child to connect to each side of that cube.

So what you want for your model is to create something of a fork-like structure with your ZSpheres, with each finger being a tine. This will give you a total of five smaller ZSpheres making up the palm, which will resolve the fat hand problem AND give you a much cleaner mesh.

Like I said, be sure to run that forum search and check out other people’s hand models. You’ll quickly get the hang of things.

is this a proper hand topography then? http://www.zbrushcentral.com/zbc/showthread.php?t=23136

That worked because he adjusted the resolutions of each ZSphere before drawing them. The catch is that you’ll still get that fat palm that would need to be manually edited. If you don’t want to have that, you need a hand that looks more like a fork, with several ZSpheres side by side to form the palm and one finger from each of them.
