Noise deformer?

Is there a way to apply some kind of fractal noise to an object with control over the scale or frequency of that noise ? The noise deformer only applies a small noise , without control over scale. I would also be happy with a brush doing that.

Hello @zzeebee ,

Are you familiar with Surface Noise and Noisemaker? Surface Noise can also be applied and edited for any brush in Brush> Surface.

Hi @Spyndel,

I was playing with noisemaker but did not find a setting for it to actually deform my object. All I could achieve is some very nice noises on the surface.

Let’s say I have a straight cylinder and want to apply a wiggle deformation to it, so that it has an organic, random zig -zag shape , like a branch for example. Can noisemaker do that ?

When you apply a surface noise in Tool> Surface it is first applied as a procedural surface effect. If you click “apply to mesh” it will actually displace the mesh’s geometry. Your mesh will need to be sufficiently subdivided to capture the detail cleanly.

I didn’t find a setting yet to scale up the noise sufficiently for the effect I am looking for. The cylinder to the left has the largest noise I could get to work, but to make a branch like the one to the right I would need more control over the noise scale, amplitude and frequency. In classic 3D packages this would be probably called a Noise Deformer or something like that.

@zzeebee

For bulk deformation you could try the various Gizmo Deformers. If it’s a tree you’re specifically after you could try the Fibermesh approach shown here ZClassroom Lesson - FiberMesh Tree - Part 1 (pixologic.com).

@tobor8man ,

Good idea, I didn’t think of fibermesh as a workaround for my branches / trees. I would think that a noise deformer , maybe as addon to the gizmo deformers, would be something nice to have in ZBrsuh. Thanks a lot !
