No way to keep a reference image locked in place?!

new zbrush core user here… I want to rotate my mesh around without the grids (map images) moving as well. Seems like a simple function to include with such an advanced program. Thanks for any help or suggestions! I was really relying on using reference images for my work!

You can do that by using the Tool>Deformation>Rotate slider. Set the axis you want by clicking on the little x, y or z in the slider.

The point of the grid reference images is that they move with the model. This is because it’s the best way to work in ZBrushCore, which only has one camera view of the model and allows free rotation the whole time. This is is different from other 3D software which has different cameras but is really very good once you are used to how it works. It’s much more suited to the type of sculpting that ZBrushCore is designed for.

So typically you would:

  1. Set up your reference images for the front, back, sides and top and bottom.
  2. Turn OFF Perspective.
  3. Start rotating to the view you want and use SHIFT to snap to that view.

HTH,

I think I see what you mean with the rotation slider. However I still like the thought of just having a background image, or images locked in place on the corner of screen or full screen no matter what view of sculpt I was on. Last year (when I tried Core for 1 month or so), I was able to bring in my reference image and leave it in place while I spun my sculpt around and worked. I wonder if that changed…

I think you must have tried the full ZBrush 4R7 trial - there’s not been a trial of ZBrushCore. The full version of ZBrush has other options for reference images as well as grids.

One other option I can think of is to use the See-through slider at the top right of the interface. With a setting of say 25% you could have a reference image visible behind the ZBrushCore interface and still be able to work on the sculpt.

Alternatively a program like XnView allows you to display an image on top of the program you are working with.
