No shadows....

I know… I’m not even suppose to be here, I’m suppose to be working… but I’ve been fighting with this in my breaks. Obviously inspired by WILLEMENOT, Pilou (spelling) supplied the link his work in the Community forum. Not as good of course, but it started a project to just to play with shadows… note there isn’t any. I’ve tried damn near every combination of lights, layers on, off… etc. I can’t get the shadows on the back wall… Frustrating. I’d do bodily harm for a good tut on casting shadows.

Back to work… Oh saw Pix’s idea… hmm maybe I can take a few more breaks ~L~

Looks pretty good. Lets see if we can’t get you some shadows… I started working on something like this as a tutorial on what I do. Maybe I can have it finished by monday…

just a wild guess, are you sure you have the “Flatten Layers” button turned on? If not you won’t get shadows. Also, depending on the complexity of the scene, turning zmode creates more realistic shadows but you might have to bump up the Length slider to see them.

I also liked that artist’s work, nice job Dlee!

That would be super, Kaz. Will look forward to it.

Digits, I’m sure I’ve tried both, but just knowing that the flatten layers has to be on helps. At least I can cut out rendering with it off.

Thanks, guys.

To shadow or not to shadow  Looks very good to me D. I am sure one of these members will come through for you . they always do :warning:  :+1: :+1: :+1: :+1:

Also, Dlee in the render palette make sure that you have “Render Shadows” selected. It isn’t on by default so I bet that is your problema!

I dont have any help for ya on this splendidly done piece Deb. You and I are in the same boat with lights and shadows at the moment…this still looks nice though :+1:

Only just begun to get into modelling myelf, so I have no additional suggestions on shadows beyond what has already been posted. But just had to say well done on an excellent image - I’m sure you’ll get the added shadows shortly. :+1: :+1: :+1:

One other question: What material is that back wall? If it’s Flat Color, it won’t accept shadows no matter what you do. But you can give it a new material by going to the layer that it’s on and painting over it with just M on in the Draw palette.

Happy to see that you found inspiration in my links
I re-put it here

There is also many painters of “trompe-l’oeil”

Even shadowless it’s first class. :+1: :+1: :+1: :+1:

Here is a quick render:

Lets start with some of the basic setups (Thanks Aurick, I did not know about the flat material thing!)

First, here is my light setup:

This is pretty much the default lights. I changed the ambient setting to 0. I normally do this when starting out, but end up adding some abience as needed. The soft shadows is a result of the Rays setting under the shadow menu. I set it to 100 for this render. I usually have it set to about 10 for a quick render, to see how the shadows look, then increase it to 100, sometimes as high as 250. A also like a lower aperture setting anout 10 to 50. Also note that the Shadow button for the first light is on.

Here is the render setting:

Render shadows button on, Flatten Layers on, Best render.

This is a basic setup for lighting and should give good shadows. Let us know if any of this helps.

Sheesh Kaz, you even manage to make a plain empty bookshelf look first class ~L~. That is a super shelf and the lighting looks super…

Not to be a nag… but if you put something on one of the shelves, would it cast a shadow on the back wall?

Oh, sorry. Its hard to see with such soft shadows…:

That’s perfect, Kaz… beautiful shadows.

Will tear mine apart and try again ~s~ It can be done… as you’ve proven.

Thanks for asking the question D. I was able to pick up a tip or two also.
Great job Kazman
