Newbie Question - Taking model/material/texture to 3d studio max

I have completed my first zbrush model. I started it from zspheres and then model it up applying texture and materials. I however have a few problems.

I have successfully taking my model to 3d max by exporting it as a OBJ file.

I am now trying to take the texture but when I do it exports the texture at a size of 960 x 720 and a resolution of 72 and when i open it in photoshop or pull it into 3d max to texture my model it looks really bad. Is there a way to export better quailty from zbrush? I have tried adjusted the perivew quailty from zbush and it didnt work. any suggestions or info???

Thanks

What method are you using to texture the model? It sounds like you’re unwrapping to the canvas and painting on that, then exporting the canvas. What you should be doing is polypaint your model and then transfer that to a texture. You can read more about polypaint at www.pixologic.com/docs. This approach lets you export a texture that’s 1024x1024 in size, 2048x2048 or 4096x4096. And because you’re painting on the model, you’re painting what YOU want to see as opposed to what the computer sees.

You also need to flip the texture vertically when going between Max and ZBrush.

As for materials, those cannot be exported from ZBrush. Materials are instructions to the rendering engine, telling it what to do with light that touches the surface of the object. Since each program has different rendering engines, materials cannot be transferred between them.

Hi Thanks, I was actually using the wrong method of painting the model causing the program to want to crash. I did this turtorial here: http://www.pixologic.com/docs/index.php/Tutorial:_Using_Colorized_Spray
that you had suggested and everything went great with creating the texture and painting the model.
I can even export the obj to max but when I try to apply the texture in max that it created it just doesnt look correctly on the model and doesnt look anything like what i painted…

Are you remembering to flip the texture vertically?

If you continue to have trouble, please show examples. This goes a long way toward diagnosing errors.
