Newb question regarding base mesh

Hello and thanks for reading my question.

I am extremely new to Zbrush and need a bit of a nudge in the right direction getting started.

My problem is the muscles on my base mesh. Let me explain.

I am attempting to sculpt some clothing for an imported mesh. The issue is that if I, for example, mask an area of the chest for the shirt and extract that, the shirt has all of the muscle detail of the base mesh. Therefore, the shirt looks extremely thin tight. If I attempt to smooth away the muscled areas, the shirt no longer actually fits and I am smoothing down to a point where the underlying base mesh starts to show through.

So, I thought that I would be clever and make a copy of the base mesh and smooth out the duplicate and start sculpting on that. The problem that I had with that is that the smoothing reduced the size of the duplicated mesh to the point that anything sculpted on the duplicate doesn’t fit right on the base mesh.

What I need is a smooth, clean surface to start with. One that doesn’t change the size so much, that anything made will not work with the actual base mesh. Any suggestions are extremely helpful.

Also, I will be doing this type of work a lot, so a long term solution will be very very helpful.

Thanks very much in advance.
