New to sculpting not to 3D

Hello everyone I believe this is my first post here. A little bit about myself I am a hobbyist, and Maya is my main modeler. I have always thought of Zbrush, Mudbox, etc as cheating because I couldn’t afford a machine good enough to use these softwares. Now I have built a professional workstation off the specs of a boxx extreme 8900 series with a nvidia k4000 and 64gb of RAM.

1.I’m trying to figure some things out about modeling pipelines.

  1. I want to make my stuff for character animation, what I need to know is, Mudbox or Zbrush or both.

  2. I’m also trying figure out whats best so far i see Zbrush as the best I dont think the Mudbox art doesnt even come close.

Welcome to the world of Z-Brush CMobley.

If you want good information about workflows there are free tutorials on pixologic.com and a whole host of information on Youtube.

However, if you don’t mind spending a few quid, then I would highly recommend books by Scott Spencer! You can purchase them from Amazon.

He is very easy to follow and has some great theory behind the sculpting work. In his “Human Anatomy” book he has a great topic on Maya vs Z-Sphere base mesh modelling.

Have fun!

ok thx for the info I guess I will download a trial and give zbrush a shot

ZBrush doesn’t have a trial version as far as I know.

It appears that they have stopped the free trial. However, I believe Sculptris is free???:

Give it a go… you can always buy the full version of z-brush once you feel comfortable with digital sculpting.

I have a copy of mudbox and I don’t use it. Z-Brush is very powerful and has heaps of features. I love the free upgrades too!

Only thing I would like to point out, is that it’s going to be a steep learning curve!
