New minotaur for character TD reel!

Hey all, its been a while since I’ve posted anything here!

I’ve been working on and off on this Minotaur model for the past 2 and 1/2 months and I’m really liking where its heading, I’m onto the texturing right now, I have a full poly skeleton with CMuscleSystem muscles attached on them wich is then rigged with Maya bones, I use the entire skeleton and the muscles to rig the character, not the maya rig! I had it skinned but I’ve unskinned for texturing sake, and also since I’ll have to add fur to the body, I also have the base nurbs mesh for the hair and long fur which I will then duplicate the surface curves with history to controle the hair themselves!!!

Texturing is being done in ZBrush and photoshop!
Rendered in MR

I’m not aiming for a realistic look but more like semi-realistic stylized!

Nice looking minotaur…looks like a great model so far… CAn’t wait for the final textured version!

impressive muscle system…would be cool to give more detail on that?is it a maya plugin?

yes, this looks intresting. Also The grayscale looks good can’t wait to see the final.

I looked at that muscle system. It’s just for Maya. Too bad. I wish Lightwave had something like it, although I don’t do too much animating.

This is awesome work so far! Aside from the technical aspects of what you are doing (which you seem to be getting along quite well with), if you can keep that character and expression shown in your sketch, you’ve got it made!

  1. you have removed the skin for texturing. why?

  2. do you plane to use Maya hair/fur or shave or something alse?

  3. what do you mean you dont use the Maya rig?

doron: answers to your questions!

1, cause I need to creat efficient uvs and I use a diffrent software then maya for the uvs, I use Magic Unfold, its just crazy and very efficient!

2, I use Maya Hair and Fur, since its easyer to integrate in the pipeline, and I try not to use too many diffrent softwares!

3, when I say i dont use the maya rig, i mean maya bones, I just use them to move the poly bones I’ve modeled and attached the muscles too, the plugin is CMuscleSystem and its only for maya I think. In other words I bind the skin to the poly skeleton and the muscles, not to the maya joints!

abe_Tamazir: thx man, but since you dont see them in the render, and its just for deformations purpose, to give a more realistic deformations, I dont need to push that further! But thx :slight_smile:

I’m currently texturing the body, will definitly take a while since I have to the the fur maps and so on, for the color of the fur, the specularity, etc…

Texturing still need a lot of work! Havent done the face accessories neither the hair accessories, still need to add fur and hair! The hair you currently see in thimage are the nurbs that will control the maya hair!

Hi all, sorry for not behing able to show updates too often! But again, thx for all the support and constructiv critisisme!

Here is an update, I’ve added the Hair and started the FUR, I’m having a hard time with the fur, as it renders extremely slow in Mental Ray, so I’ve switched to maya render, doesnt take as long, the quality isnt as good either, and I cannot seem to figure out how to have shadow on the hair, I have a few Light, but acording to a friend, only in Mental Ray you can make the Fur Receive Shadows!

That is kinda stupid I think, but oh well!
If any of you have any suggestions, please dont be shy!

Nice. You need to look at altering the colour of the character to be similar to realistic animals. They have varying patches of colour to present an image to others. With good reason, evolution is rarely wrong. Hahaha.

As for the hair, if you did it as paintfx, it would show. The way you are doing it I believe you have to convert to curves in order for the internal renderer to see it. Not 100% sure as I don’t use Maya’s internal renderer or MentalRay, but we do something like the curve thing to go out to RIBs. Or I’d use something like Shave, which takes car of it for me with I believe a 2 pass approach if I remember the documentation correctly. :wink:

Jason: thx for the tips man, I already had that in mind, but maya presets have some great ways of faking those, and THats what I’m going to use later on when I’ll be satisfied with the shadows issues!:wink:

I had to switch from Mental Ray to Maya renderer for Render time Issues! Now I have to switch from Maya Renderer to Renderman For Maya Renderer because its fast, relyable, and it renders everything so well and fast, also that will fix my issue with the shadow not being cast on the fur!

Now here is some tweeking, before Fur and Hair for the Renderman Render, just a tree Spotlight lighting for now!

Hey all, didnt had much time to work on this in the past few weeks, So I changed render for Renderman for maya! The reason why I havent been able to work on it is that most of my time is taken by a DVD Production pipeline series I’m making. SO now I had a bit of some more time to put on it, so heres a render update. I decided to not put FUR cause it takes way too long to render!
