I was just reading up on the new Unreal 4 that is coming out. I was hoping to use Zbrush to skin game characters for mod development. Then I hear that Maya 5 Personal Edition is shipping with the product. On Maya’s website, it seems they have taken alot of features straight from Zbrush. I doubt it has Zbrush’s memory management, noting the requirements. I was wondering if anybody has or is planning on getting this Maya 5 and how the next Zbrush which hopefully comes out this year will stack up? I’m definitely not interested in dropping $2000.00 for any software, but considering the particle and animation software I was planning on buying in the future, it actually might be a good idea. Oh yeah, and Zbrush won a game developers award along with Maya and FaceGen modeller. Peace.
Don’t know if this will help.
On Maya website, you can enroll and be put
down as a member even though you do not have the software.
The obvious benefits are downloads patches etc.
Also in conjunction with Maya 5 the company is sending representives to all the major cities a few times a year with an exhibit of the program. They are sending invitations to people on their site
I attended the one in New York. My knowledge is very limited but the presentation seemed to bore those that had 4.5.
If you live near the exhibit location, it is worth the trip to see it. And an excellent opportunity to try the software
Those that attend are given a copy of Maya 5 PLE, which makes the trip worthwhile.
Ps They have free food also.
Hope this helps.
Didn’t buy it. Have 4.5
I think the version it ships with is different then Maya5 PLE…because you need to export to the unreal environment…I could be wrong. As for how ZBrush will help…don’t know yet…lol.
We’ll have to wait and see. You do mean UT2004 right?
You won’t be able to import a Zbrush .obj file into Maya PLE. You will need to find someone who owns Maya to convert it to either a .ma or .mb file. Then you could import a Zbrush created .obj file into the Maya PLE.
I don’t see how Alias is copying Zbrush in Maya 5. Alias had Artisan long before Zbrush came out, so if anything I think Pixologic has “Learned” from Alias. But that’s not the point anyway, because as you noted, both programs have their strengths and weaknesses.
IMO, Maya and Zbrush form a (symbiotic) program, and I’m hoping their integration will increase in the future. For instance, I’d love to have Zbrush’s materials in Maya. There looks to be a way to do this in the next Zbrush, and I am stoked!
What it really comes down to is, why do you need to buy Maya if you just want to make game models? There are tons of free software that will allow you do to this, from G-max to Wings. IMO, if you just want to make game models, buy Zbrush, and download the Maya PLE.
I hope this helps.

Edit: If you are planning on getting Maya. Wait until Maya 6 comes out. It should be out soon, like sometime this spring. Because if you buy 5 right now, you won’t be able to upgrade cheaply. That’s one of the reasons why I stuck with Maya 4.5. $900 for an upgrade is outrageous!
If you decide to wait for Maya 6, get your name on their list.
Don’t eat the tuna salad.
WC agree about the 900 dollars, so did most of the people in the room.
Coincidences.
I have been invited to this years Maya 5
presentation in New York. It is scheduled for March 10.
Weather and health permitting, I plan on attending.
If anyone is interested in Maya 5 and has questions that they would like addressed please let me know.
Last years group only wanted to know how many calories were in the tunafish sandwich.
If you would keep the questions simple, I would appreciate it.
