Nerrick, the Dwarf

Hey Fellas!

Been a while…

Here’s something I’m currently working on - I’ll paint the details and textures in Z, the initial sculpture was done in Silo and Wings. C&C would be fine!

Hi

Interesting looking character, looking forward to seeing where ya take him.

What do you do in wings ya can’t do in silo? Just curious…even curious about the vice versa.

Well, I just like the Mirai-like Workflow in Wings and it has some nice features Silo doesn’t have currently, I’ll give you more detailed information when I come home, gotta go to school now

I like the skin, it´s very soft.

Damn fine start. I’d like to see him with a big long beard and hair. That would help bring him to life in a dwarven fashion…

Thomas, I really enjoy your work. I love what your doing with this character. Kinda reminds me of Pancha from Emperor’s New Groove. I’m also a Wings, Silo user and want to start with Z when I get the money, but I’m also interested in why use wings and Silo, is it just to get the correct flows. Also, just curious, where are you going to school?

Thanks for your comments!

I’m also writing a complete modeling tutorial on him, from Silo to ZBrush, you can read a first, early vesion here, C&C on the tut would be fine, too!

Maybe too much text right now, I’ll try to rewrite some stuff and try to keep the balance between text and images!

@aminuts, again: Well, Wings currently is a lot better when it comes to selections, for example. It has Selection Highlighting and Pre-Selections built in, so I can model very fast and accurate (although Silo 1.4 will also have these features), also Commands like Select Edge or Ring often don’t give me the expected results in Silo, Wings is really great here. And yeah, it’s just the production-proven Wings workflow that makes me enjoy it a lot: It’s all these little things that make it so comfortable to work with, e.g.: When I have selected some faces and press “v”, all of these faces will be converted to vertices without a hitch, the tools just work very nicely and I love the Wings Soft Selections. On the other side, Silo is doing some great stuff that Wings can’t compete with at all. The cool Topology Brush, it’s WAY faster than Wings, it has tablet support (very important to me!), it’s just such a solid and nice modeler and I really can’t await the 1.4 release! Ugh, that was a little long now…

Dickei: Well, you’ll have to wait a little until you’ll see beard or hair, but at least here’s a shot of his hood quickly blocked out:

Andy: Thanks! Well, this time it was just to train my skills in traditional modeling and to have something I can write a tutorial for, hehe  But yeah, Edgeloops are a major issue here. I’m not so familiar with Silos Topology Brush yet, so I just work the “old school way”, heh! I think I could’ve modeled this guy in ZBrush in not even half the time I needed in Wings/Silo (though I’m not the fastest boxmodeler out there, I’m addicted to rotate around my models for hours… ;)), so I’m of course very interested in different solutions when it comes to edgeLoops. We’ll see what Pixolator has in mind for us poor modelers!

To answer your question: Oh, I’m not in a CG school or so, I’m a self-taught Maya/Silo/Wings/ZBrush, etc. User, I’m currently studying traditional sculpting in an art school in vienna. It’s great to work with Clay at school and trade it for Polys when I come home. Also, my sculpting tutor is very interested in the stuff I’m dong here and wants me to buy a Silo and ZBrush license for him, so I think there will be fun times ahead. I’ll post his stuff here after I taught him how to use the software! Should be very cool to watch his results, hehehe!

Just caught myself fooling around, hehe:

Just rendered out a little turnaround, it’s 5mb, quicktime, so you can watch it frame by frame

No textures yet, still having fun with the detailing passes. Quality is a little low, thanks to the compression. C&C would be very nice!

i really love your style !
nice job, very clean.

PS The object 3D was not in “double face” so some holes in the movie

Thanks Thomas!

I am glad you answered so well, I was curious and thought some newbies to 3d might find the info useful as well.

He’s coming along nicely!

An early color-pass:

Alright… I think it’s time for a small update. Since I wasn’t too satisfied with the form of the model after the last detailing pass, I adjusted quite some stuff. Relatively subtle tweaks, but I think the form looks a lot more interesting now.

Also, I canned the texture. I didn’t post any texturing updates here since it turned out too realistic - And that didn’t work too well with the comic/realistic look Nerrick is based on. So I’ll texture him again, but this time, I won’t go for realism at all, I’ll play around with a lot more color variation and different texture passes in order to get a more believable (not realistic), more suitable look!

I LOVE this model, Thomas. The sculpting is Sah-weeeet! I really like the scars and bumps and warts you added. They add a nice depth to him. I also like the new lighting a lot. He has more life to him. Keep on posting those updates…

Dickie

Okay, I had some time to finish up texturing and detailing. I know that I could have still worked a lot more on the color map, but I want to finish the project and I think after he’s covered with hair and stuff, he’ll actually look good enough. Gotta finally finish him up!

So, in the highest SubD lvl he weighs a little over 700.000 faces, all the geometry and texture detail has been hand painted (of course! :)) - Well, here we go:

And of course, higher Resolution:

Oh, one thing: I did a little color correction in Photoshop, the details may look a little “too much” right now, but don’t you worry, that’s just cause of the Photoshop adjustments.

Thanks!

…for this stunning dwarf ?
Pilou

Very nice model,

Would look good dressed up as a Dwarf you should add a Cinderella type figure along side (and maybe six other Dwarfs;) )

The skin textures are superb along with the facial detail

Nice one :+1:
