Need your professional opinion

I would like feedback on whether or not to invest in a graphics tablet -

If you use a tablet, I’d apreciate your thoughts on:

  1. What are the artistic benefits of a pen/tablet over a mouse in 2d and 3d?
  2. How well do they work, are they used in combination with a mouse or stand-alone?
3)How easy are they to use?
  3. what is the best type of tablet to buy (Graphire and Intuos…any others to consider)?

Thanks in advance for your professional opinions

I have both graphire and intuos2

Both are better than a mouse with Zbrush…

Intuos2 is AWESOME! can almost feel what you are sculpting…

Graphire is cool also… but not as much feel to it… not as sensitive, and I dont think it understands when pen is tilted.

I only use mouse for Zspheres now…

There are five topics on this in the Quicklinks alone. A quick search will turn up more.

hmm well I am no Mentat or Pixolator or Cardwell, but I will tell you that I will not be without my pad…it is an extension now of my arm/hand…I draw lefthanded and use the mouse righthanded…so there are many times I am working both hands at once…I have the little wacom graphire I guess…and it was under a hundred dollars…some of the best money I ever spent…other advice…do not buy some off brand…my first was some off brand…the thing didn’t last three months from what I remember…got this one and have been in love ever since…just my two bits worth…Happy Easter

Oops…apparently this topic was not among the approved ones for the ZBrush Forum. I apologize for posting :frowning:

my two bits:

one big benefit is the pressure-sensitivity for variable stroke width

they are easy to use and can be used in conjunction with a mouse – the pen can also be used for mouse functions

one hindrance in my case is organizing my desktop to have room for the keyboard, mousepad and tablet at the same time

Hi all,

I have a Intuos (a4) tablet from Wacom problem is my main machine now is a Toshiba Satellite Laptop, with no COM port needed for the tablet to connect. Is it wise to buy a port replicator, or does that has influence on the sensitivity of the tablet?

Is a tablet better than a mouse? Try this test:

1 - Take a common pencil and draw with it
2 - Take an apple or an orange
3 - Shove the eraser end of the pencil into the apple or orange so that only the lead end is sticking out
4 - Draw the same thing as you did with just the pencil but this time holding your hand on the top of the apple or orange

Which was easier for you? Which gave you more control?

Not only is a tablet more natural but, as others have pointed out, it is also pressure sensative so that you can simulate light/heavy strokes (etc) simply by pressing harder/lighter just as you would with a pencil.
