Need info on how to Mirror with details

Hi, i am not sure if this is the right place to post but will post here anyway. I am going NUTS trying to figure out how to mirror geometry such as arms with details but have wasted a full day with no success.

  1. I have tried to use the Modify Topology- Mirror and Weld

Got a message that says, “This function can not be applied to a mesh with multiple subdivision levels”

  1. I have tried to use the Deformation- Mirror

Got a message that says, “This function can not be applied to a mesh with multiple subdivision levels”

  1. I tried to use the GoZ to Maya- Duplicate Special. Also just -1 in scale. GoZ back to ZBrush but the details have been flipped. Tried to use both the Set Face and Reverse in Maya but no success.

You are probably wondering why I did not have arms on both sides before adding the details and using the X. It is because I did the details on only one arm and duplicated the other two. I know I could have duplicated both sides so am I pretty screwed?

I will soon have no more hair to pull out so any information you can give me will be appreciated.

Thanks

Well, you could just delete the lower subdivision levels. If that’s not an option, here’s one way to mirror while retaining both sculpting levels and details:

  1. under the ‘geometry’ tab, while at the highest subdivision level, click the ‘freeze subdivision levels’.

  2. then click ‘mirror and weld’, it should work now.

  3. turn off ‘freeze subdivision levels’.

You should now have a perfectly mirrored tentacle with subdivision levels intact. However, the new tentacle likely won’t have the sculpted details. To copy them over, mask the half which has the details, then click on ‘smart resym’ under the ‘deformation’ tab. You could do this at the highest subd level right away, or (if you get artifacts) start from lowest, click the button, then move up one, click the button again, and so on until you’re sure the transfer worked at each level.

zplugin.subtoolmaster.mirror should give you what you’re looking for.

Wow, so it does! Tnx, beta_channel, it never would have occurred to me to use that. I learned a new thing as well. Awesome.

Thanks nagulov and beta_channel for your quick responses. Subtool Master plug-in did the trick without losing any of the details.
