hi all. i have been using zbrush for about a year now and have also acquired a limited knowlage of maya. my goal is to make a career in bulding game models but seeing as i’ve never studied anything 3d i feel a little lost as to where i should start. what i’m after is some advice from some of you guys working in the industry on what kind of experience is required for this particular field. is it possible to get into the industry bassed on tallent alone or do i need to studie at university? if so can anyone recomend any coarses and universitys (preferably in london) geard towards the games industry (modeling in particular). i would appreciate some help on this one as i’m really serious about doing this, i just need a bit of guidance.
thanks in advance
IMO, people in this business care more about ability than educational record.
To name a few individuals who became successful without direct University graduation from a related field.
Sakaguchi Hironobu - Creator of Final Fantasy - Quit Uni halfway
Nomura Tetsuya - SquareEnix`s Director and Designer, 2yrs college on advertising.
Kojima Hideo - Metal Gear series - He was into Film during Uni years
Kojima Ayami - Known for her designs for Castlevania - self taught
If you have the skills to do it, few would care about from what and where did you grad from.
But again, self study has its limit.
Agree with Zenneth. Also you might wanna get Digital Tutors’ tutorials of Zbrush, will help a lot.
P.S. Torrents are illegal
I am not quite sure what you are asking? Are you asking if you should go to college or are you asking what should you start working on for a portfolio?
Weather or not you need to go to a university really depends on your personality. Are you the the self motivated type of person that can put in 8hrs+ a day to training by yourself without anyone telling you to? OR do you need someone riding your back to get stuff done?
I am not necessarily pro-University but it does do a few more things than just teach you the applications. Peers: these guys will push you to do better. Even you dont make any friends at all you will still see other peoples work and it “should” drive you to do better. I worked freelance for a few years and working in a bubble sorta makes you crazy. I am by defualt a loner and I was even going a little artistically stir crazy. The university also showed me what I really wanted to do. They usually make you do a wide range of skills…and even if you hate it this will make you 1) a better artist and 2) let you know for sure what you DONT want to do.
My best advise is try as many skills as you can to find the right one for you and then beat that **** into a plup. Work on it all day everyday. This is sorta you free-pass…you don’t get this free time back to work on your carrer. So it’s really up to you… Can you be motovated enough? If you kick ass and take names you will get what you want.
