Nanomesh / aligning

hello.

My question is more about technique. The main problem that I have is with alligning nanomesh.

When one want to make a snake…you know we can make shape, scuplt scales etc. But it is not the most efficient way. Then I learned way to make to make a snake from imm curve. It’s ok but still not what I was looking for…when You are progressing with more zbrush knowledge it got to me that nanomesh should be the best way for it.

But when I make this “bald” snake shape to be covered with scales…all nanomesh tiles are in different way. Using settings to rotate them still make rotating and every one is in different direction.

Is there is something I should know about alligning nanomesh for them all to be in direction that I want them ?

Hi @lukasso

This just depends on your topology. Some types of meshes are going to be more complicated than others. Some meshes will be too complicated to apply all the nanos at once–you will have to apply them in smaller sections at a time. Polygroups will be useful here. Divide your mesh into polygroups that correspond to any major direction changes to the mesh and insert your nanos with a polygroup island target rather than “all polygons.”

Here are the major adjustments to try:

  1. In the Namomesh > Alignment menu, “Align to Normals” is probably what you’re going to want for most organic meshes.

  2. In the Tool > Geometry > Modify Topology menu, “Spin Edge” and “Align Edge” can sometimes make a difference.

  3. If it comes to it, you can always adjust the direction manually, poly by poly. Be sure to check out the video here for placement tips and how to force align nanos:

Good luck!

thank You ! now i know that making them all at once was the biggest mistake :stuck_out_tongue:
