My latest work. Aquatic alien & Others.

Hey all! Just thought i’de share my latest work (Which is actually an update of a much older piece). He’s an aquatic alien from a popular computer game. They are a pieceful and noble race, renouned for their kindness.

I’m getting close to finishing him I think, and the whole process has been a huge learning curve.
Any comments/crits will be greatly recieved, please let me know how I can improve!

I’m currently doing this as a personal project, in the aim of getting some work together for a portfolio. I wish to work as a freelance character artist in the future.

Niiice I like the skin texture and colors and it fits in a marine life just fine, it also gave me an impression of a starwars creature

Thank you very much! I appreciate the comment.
Most of the people that have seen this model say it reminds them of star wars  It’s not intentional I promise hehe. Im glad you think the texture fits marine life, it’s been a challenge to paint something that looks ‘right’.

Thanks again!

When I see something like this I have to smile. He is quite well done, both the sculpting and texturing.

Thank you very much! Glad it made you smile. Any crits as to how I can improve?

You could take a look at reptile or even fish eyes for color schemes - having most of the eye color dark gray detracts somewhat from the overall impact they could otherwise have.
The skin texture might also benefit with some brighter coloring on the forehead and snout areas, as well as the the lower lip. Give it a try.
Whatever you decide to try, first clone and save the cloned model and texture as a new tool - and just have fun with it.

Thank you very much for all the advice filament! I wholeheartedly agree with most of the things you said
Why do I need to clone and save as a new tool btw?

Been working on a new model today. Taking a break from my aquatic one

Hi Axeface, Cloning and saving out the clone as new tool allows to you to experiment, mangle and generally muck about with a copy rather then the original tool/model free of any concern of ruining a good model. Nothing worse then going for a “save tool” only to discover that you’ve saved something nasty along with your original model.
Having that original saved can be a blessing.
I was given this advice by someone who work extensively with photoshop: save you original file and save a copy. Play with the copy, preserve the original.
I like that new sculpt you are working on as well as the first one. :+1:
Cheers

I see! Thanks filament

Update to my new guy (well, its female, so girl ;p )

Great work Axeface, how did you texture the eyes?

great job. i like the new eyes…but, after seeing the first image of him i was expecting more alien-esque eyes…i really liked the original color for the eyes in the first image of him…then i was thinking a brighter color, etc. for the retina pupil…but, anyways, the new eyes work. good job!

Thank you all! I have a question. Is there a way for me to edit my entire mech (including the eyes) as one object? So i can skew it etc and the eyes stay in place? The eyes are sub objects arm.

Also, I need to give his snout some more polygons. YOu can see the lack of polys on his snout and his mouth. Is there a way to select a certain area, and divide it more, while still keeping all the detail I have given the area so far?

Update to a model I started a while back. Draenei from World of Warcraft. Just thought i’de post. Still lots of work to be done on him.
