My human anatomy look wrong...

Hello, I just build human anatomy from scratch. I just create bone first then build up to muscles, to create a shape form of anatomy… I have anatomy book with full of 2d reference, somehow I find it look wrong and don’t know where to fix it. Please criticism and feedback. I know about face, it look like skull… Because I just starter add muscles on skull. heh.

Dude 1st the anatomy is very wrong 2nd try to work whit the form the anatomy is immportant but the form is most immportant

The first and most important thing is to really understand the anatomy. This is probably not a blueprint that works for everyone but does work for me.

  1. Study intensly anatomy.
With that I don’t just mean look at pictures and try to recreate it but really studying how muscles work, how do they connect to the bone, where does each muscles connect to the bone.
  2. Overdo at the beginning
When you have a decent understanding of anatomy, it helped me a lot to not sculpt biologicly correct humans but cartoonlike characters where you can exaggerate each muscle. I was studying and rebuilding lots and lots and lots of bodybuilding photos.
  3. Dial down to “biologicly correct”
While exaggerating the muscles you will more and more come up with your personal collection of prefered brushes, stroking techniques, an overall feeling for natures flow and from there it’s just a simple last step to dial the exaggerated muscles down to normal.

What helped me a lot was Ryan Kingslien. He has very good videos out there. Just go to Youtube an search for Ryan Kingslien and you will find more than enough to get started.

Here’s a visual to highlight some of the biggest problems:

Bone landmarks are in blue and muscles are in red. The proportions of the head, hands, and feet are off. They’re too small. The biggest anatomical problems are in the shoulder and torso. The deltoid is completely undefined (as well as the shoulder bone absent) and the trapezius is way overblown. Looks like you have the pecs going down to the base of the ribcage (which is also a bit off.) You missed a section of muscles on the lower back. I didn’t mark the arms and legs because they need a lot of work. Start with the boney protrusions of the shoulder elbow and wrist.

Hope that helps.

Thank cpost, I’ve completely forgot about head unit! Now I know why anatomy look error, I will fix it soon as I got back on pc. And you were right about collarbone, seventh rip, shoulder blade and deltoid seem need more structure. I need fresh eye on this modelling…

kornyclown, that was not bad workflow… and good idea for practice, I should play about with muscles. I am sure I have really good book I brought in 2006, “how to draw marvel by stan lee”… and I got “how to drawing fantasy character” as gift ages ago and I haven’t open it yet! - in there it have heroic male and warrior women and many more…

Possible it is good time for me to blow a dust off my books and try create heroic male, heh.

Simsan12, yeah… that the reason why I ask ZbrushCentral for fresh eye, and I know it just look wrong. It was my first high res human body builder from a scratch. but it is not my very first character I’ve made, this is my first low polygon character ever I’ve made… in 2007. heh

I need a break from my new touchscreen monitor, my arm hurt because my monitor are too big! heh.

here a picture of work in torso I am improved just today, I know it is not finished as I need build this tummy because I think it is too hallow.

you can tell me if there anything need to improve just in case I missed, I shall carry on tomorrow.

(off topic)
I just fell in love with my new computer because my old computer only can hold up to 5,000 polygon in a total. ( include subtool ) I am very happy that I just unleashed my skill and break through my wall which I was hit a wall while ago. ( I brought zbrush 4.0 when it go in pre-order… wish buy new pc before I buy zbrush, silly me…)

The update is a big improvement.
You mentioned the character is a body builder. This is a good thing because body builders have highly defined muscles and low body fat allowing you to isolate specific muscle groups. This is also bad because some of the muscles become disproportionate and many of the bodys natural contours are changed. One example of this is the latissimus dorsi, which result in an almost webbed look to the arms. This is illistrated below:
anatomy2.jpg
Also of note: You’ll want the shoulders and neck visible when working on the torso. The deltoids overlap the pecs. I moved the iliac crest and added the serratus at the thoracic arch, which you need to do as well. There’s an area in black brackets; this area needs to be eliminated. The pecs should be brought down to meet up with the “hidden” abs.

I join that statement, big improvement so far.
The issues I see are that you seem to look at the muscles too superficial. For example the pecs (pectoralis major) are not that “quadratic”, allthough the visible parts of it often look like beeing quadratic. They, like all muscles, much rather flow. The origin is right on the breastbone and from there it tapers, flows under the deltoid and connects right after the shoulder joint on the upper arm. Like this: http://www.muskelaufbau-forum.de/planer/m_pectoralis_major.jpg for example. And that is true for each muscle. Understanding the flow is the secret sauce.
The muscles on the back (trapezius, latissimus dorsi, teres major…) are missing completely.

Thank you, both of you.

i haven’t touch my pc yet… ( I am using iPod just now…)
it was my son school summer holiday so I don’t have a time to touch my pc and zbrush…

I shall carry on when summer holiday end.

cheer!

I just got back on my own pc and done some more zbrush anatomy modelling. while my son school holiday, I just revise anatomy books and I find that most of body are in incorrect area and incorrect scales. I have move the body part into correct place , and sculpt top torso and shoulder and upper arm. I do not yet sculpt rear torso and shoulder, it will be my next sculpt before do legs then finally head… it still need more work in it and I just learn my new favours tool - flatting brush.

critic are always welcome

Done some more today…</br>Anatomybodyfront_zps97e1ff7d.jpgAnatomybodyrear_zpseeb24bab.jpgAnatomybodyside_zps8a1f526b.jpg

Well, I see you’re progressing. It’s improving from time to time.

The back still looks wrong overall but maybe you haven’t worked on that yet.
The reworked pecs are looking a lot better then the square ones but the thorax (ribcage) is a little off. This curve of the thorax, where the abs (musculus rectus abdominis) beginn, is actually aligned pretty close to the bottom of the pecs.

Keep it up :+1:

Thank t.manz, I didn’t notice that as I just follow bone. Silly me…

Just did more work on this anatomy today, here a updated… I think I am happy with this improve and I’ve learn my flow for muscle. I did upper body, not yet do lower body part and leg. improve trapezius and latissimus dorsi, I still need do external oblique abdominal for upper body… I may miss teres major and infraspinatus.

Hey all again, I has been sidetrack too long. Now, Ive just return to this anatomy work. done few change shape and smooth skin out because it starting look right to me.

better or worse?

Busy bee for a while and finally, I got time for Human Study.

Nearly there. I stopped because it still look wrong to me, maybe it is me or it is really something went wrong in there.

Critics and feedback are always welcome.
