My First Zbrush Sculpt

Hi everyone,

First time I ever post something here, and it’s my very first Zbrush work. The subject I’ve picked is a creature from Metroid named Kraid. Always have been a great fan of the serie and I tought this creature would be interesting for trying Zbrush for the first time (I currently use the trial version). Started it some time ago with Zspheres, then made the UV Layout in Maya and then started the real sculpting. This is where I am right now:

Hope I can get some feedback
Thanks:D

To be the first sculpt it is really good… Keep working on it, you almost hit the nail!

Hey thanks for the comment, I’ll keep working on it for sure! But I don’t think I have ‘‘hitten the nail’’ yet since the most difficult part is coming : doing the scales! Did some tests yesterday, and I have no choice but to do it one scale after the other if I want it to be clean.

Here’s a little update on Kraid:

I made the belly’s thorns and then inserted them on my main model as subtools.
I made small modifications of his chest, feets, belly and belly’s ‘‘navels’’.
Started to do the texture of the scales with an hexagonal alpha I created myself so that it looks like the reference picture I’m using (making each scales one by one). The scales are not going to stay flat and clean as they are right now.

Here’s a screenshot:

Again any feedback, comments or critics are more than welcome!

I think the scales might be easier if u make your alpha with several of them linked together…that would go much faster. Also, you can maybe vary the size a bit to add more of an organic feel. Great work for your first sculpt though! I’m a newb to zbrush as well so it’s good to see more of us making cool first pieces!

Hey, thanks for the feedback, really encourages me to work harder on that guy!

And for the suggestion you gave me, I already did some tests before with an alpha regrouping many scales, but the result was far from what I wanted, it was hard to make the scale groups fit together. It also did some distortion in some parts were I tried it. I prefer to have a clean model even if I have to work longer on him

Hi again everyone,

Almost finished with the sculpt of my model, maybe just minor things I may adjust. Here’s a picture of the almost finished sculpt:

Now I’m going to try to export a displacement in Maya (which I heard a lot of people have problems to do) and if it works I’m going to try polypainting it.

If you ever see something on my sculpt that seems weird to you, let me know!

An update of the work with different angles:

Still have some to do, want to add some details and randomness to the scales and many other little things. 9 days before my trial finishes.
Oh and I did some render tests in Maya and it works! Scott Spencer is my god :smiley: Anyway don’t hesitates to say what you think of it.

Hi everyone

I have now finished polypainting my model on Zbrush, it goes very fast for doing a first color pass! So I was able to render this into Maya with the displacement map, the normal map, the cavity map and the color from the polypainting. Here’s is the raw render of where I am right now:

Kraid_Color.gif

It has a cartoony feel right now (which is normal since it comes from a cartoony artwork), but I still want to push further into detailling the texture. I must also make a specular map because right now the specular only comes from the basic phong shader I putted on him. Must also retouch the caity map which currently makes some part too black (like in the back and on the belly). After I am happy with the body I’ll do the little parts like the belly horns, teeths and eyes.

I’d make the scales vary a lot more, they are too uniform as is.

@womball: Yeah, I know the scales are too uniform (especially on the back), I saw it myself before and other people told it to me too. Problem is, I did that with the ZBrush trial and now mine is over :cry: It’s pretty sure that I’m going to buy Zbrush soon:D

Notice also that this is my first sculpt, I think I did well for a first, but I also know that it could have been improved a lot more. And I don’t want too continue eternally on this project too so I think I’ll just leave the modelisation as it is. Anyway thanks for your comment.

Hi everyone,
Finally found time to finish my First Zbrush Sculpt, learned a lot of things while doing this project. The texture was done with polypaint and the pose is done with the transpose tool. C&C are welcome.

wow! final render looks awesome! please explain how u ended up with that render! great stuff!

KRAID!

I like the feel of this guy. Not something I see on here everyday. Good work!

@Phrost : Well final render is kinda basic, I exported my model in Maya then I applied the displacement, normal and cavity map exported from Zbrush. The color also comes from Zbrush polypaint, and finally a specular map. Except that a bit of glow in the eyes, an AO pass and that’s it!
@alanoon : Glad you recognized him :slight_smile:
@Universable : Thanks a lot!
