My first Male anatomy study

HI, this is my first post and my first male anatomy study. I did this to learn more about anatomy as I enjoy character design and animation and also to learn more Zbrush. I wanted to produce something completely in zbrush so started with zspheres which again ive never used before.

I found painting the retopology very hard but feel more confident in it now and also found the retopology tools in zbrush 4 to be extremely dissapointing and wont be using them again:td: the rest of it Im loving!
thanks:)

Hi David,

This is a promising start. I would say however that the anatomy is looking a little over defined, almost like it has the skin removed.

Keep it up I look forward to seeing how it progresses.

Nice job mattock.

I hear the same thing over and over about the retopology in Zbrush. It would seem likely that Pixolator has been seeing it too. I guessing of course, but I would imagine that he’s probably working on a better retopo system for Z. I would bet that it will be either presented as a plug in or at the very least, the next release. Not that it isn’t an amazing program already but imagine if it had a topogun retopo system in it. :))

alrite dave?fancy seeing you on here

Looking good, I agree with the previous comment about some of it being overly defined, specifically beneath the waist, should be bit more of a smooth transition between those muscle groups.

And not too keen on having to retopo in zbrush either!

Guessing you’ve been busy with animation recently, look forward to seeing more!

Hey, thanks for the quick replies
Ive rendered with Ambient Occlusion in zbrush which makes the crevises more prominent, but I will definitaley go back and add more fat and tissue as suggested. Il post again when done.

I intend to take this on and create different characters from this.
Thanks again

PS nice to see you on hear Jason, hope all is going well. Ive been a member for years but only just properly got into zbrush and made this first post.

This is a pretty good start,

First thing I noticed is the flank area, they need more roundness and volume, the hip area can be a little wider, right where the flanks are. Also the skull should get a little wider at the back, and watch the neck area. Keep it up man, if you work on the muscle shapes and volumes, this will be a nice piece.

Hi Mattock!

You are not doing so bad, but for crits I would pay more atention
to the proportions. I assume the natural proportions are what you are after since you are doing an anatomy study.

  1. I think the legs are too big and the hip is too small compared to the rest.
    Also hands seem too small.

2.Another thing is that the latissimus dorsi back muscle tends to show also from the front a little bit from the sides.

Im also struggling anatomy and have a work in progress thread. In my case I’m not aiming for exact human proportions but trying to adapt them to an unnaturally long and skinny demon figure. If you want to return me some crits I would really appreciate it.

It’s a great start! I think you’re using Scott Spencer’s human anatomy zbrush book aren’t you? It’s a great book for technique but the actual model you make is pretty poor, has to be said (think he kept it intentionally basic to not swamp the reader). Better imo to use his techniques but get some decent reference photos to learn from.

Hi, I finally had time to go back and change the shape and add more flesh and skin as suggested by everyone, here is the update, thanks:)

Hand should be about the size of his head, they are a little bit too small. And there’s something with his butt and lower torso that look off.

I agree, the hands are too small. Here’s a diagram of the muscles that might assist with some of the leg muscles including the glutes.

Good job so far, though. :+1:

Hey, thanks again for the valuable crits. I agree the hands are too small. A bit got trimmed when I cut them out with a refined edge in photoshop, but I can see now they need to be bigger. Think Ill just screen shot it next time instead of rendering then cutting out in photoshop.

The lower torso looks ok to me, can you elaborate on this ?.. if i cover his legs and just look at the upper body it looks in proportion, I used measure guides also.

The butt… yeah maybe needs some more mass to that. Thanks for that image Eric, :+1: I have the book human anatomy for the artist but its good to see the names of the muscles in one image like this…
thanks again… ill try and refine more asap

HI, Ive just realised that the hands are larger than what they appear, it was cutting out the renders in photoshop that trimmed off too much… here is a straight screengrab from zbrush with no cutting out and the hands look larger, and also the whole body has an extra few pixels now. Ill get on with adding more volume to the butt next. thanks
