More Questions from "ArtistBob"

More techno info and questions;

Back to another dose of ZBrush again, it’s addictive, you know ( but I guess I’m preaching to the choir) I’m making time to devote . . . didn’t expect the program to be that enticing ! Hopefully, Without sounding like a country song, This time I’ll give you a little insight to my outlook and goals (and a few questions thrown in).

I got a lot of pokers in the fire professionally / personally, these 25 hour days, eight day weeks aren’t easy. My profession(metal sculpture) was/is “old school” - 10% inspiration (theory, sketching, generally white collar)and 90% perspiration (labor intensive tasks, using sheet-metal working equipment, etc. - blue-collar) basically has been a pre-computer era. Fast forward 20 years, I’m now 60-ish, body parts are wearing out and I’m searching for an easier creative process to express my marketable skills. (there’s that country melody again) The reason I’m telling you this is so you know where I’m coming from and where potential I’m going to…(Z?) Now my life is being bombarded with computer graphics, CAD, Digital Art and yes, ZBrush possibilities. Instead of spending a lot of time looking for answers to my techno questions in the Zcommunities very vast and extensive “research Library”, I’ll throw them out to anyone who wants to “field” them. (Member input needed) to determine whether ZBrush can work for me.

1.) Can I design / create or sculpt an object (Zsphere, etc.) in ZBrush - send it to a 3-D program, manipulate it there or send it to a program that could produce a sheet-metal layout pattern drawing for me to cut out, form and weld up as a finished sculpture? . . . or similar variations thereof. - and if so, particular leads, programs, and “addresses”, would be greatly appreciated.

  1. completely different subject and process - Can or How do I(in ZBrush Paint) create a painting on the “canvas” that has a resolution so tight or high that when it is blown up to 24" x 36" or 36" x 48" or larger and not have pronounced “jaggies” or pixelization?

I know I’m probably asking a lot, but from what I’ve seen and read about ZBrush so far, it could be possible.

Thank you in advance for any help you can contribute to my questions, but I have to tell you, I’ve not had much opportunity to use this type of “community networking” process but from what I’ve been involved with so far in the “ZBrush World”, I have been truly amazed by the responsive quickness, accuracy and bonding of the members to members - and because of the typing involvement in it I was forced to buy one of these" voice activating" type programs, and for someone like myself at 5 to10 words a minute, it’s a godsent!

ArtistBob . . . . over

ArtistBob, as ZBrush has no native measurements that can be exported to the real world, I would suggest “Rhino” to do your patterns. You can go directly to laser cutting via DXF file or print to paper. You will have to sort out compound shapes manualy. I think Rhino has a free demo. There are other that will do the same job but the one I use for work costs as much as a small car.

As far as painting in ZBrush is concerned, if you say what kind of projects you have in mind, it will be easier to make suggestions. Print on paper? Print on canvas?

  1. is easily achieved with high canvas settings and then using a prog like BlowUp from AlienSkin. Check it out! Works like a charm. No jaggies, even in high enlargements. And 1)… remind me to write that book together with Pride… It’s all possible, but the variations are almost endless. Regarding Sheet Metal… yes, you CAN get a cutting scheme out of it when you stick to the mesh edges as crease lines in your mind, and the use a UV unwrap program like the one from Headus to relax the object into 2D and then use the resulting 2D layout to cut/assemble the object. Together with a plasma torch and a modified router table it works… believe me… it works well, within the limitations…

Bob: I have a deep respect for “old school”. Without it we wouldn’t have new school. :lol: I actually enjoyed reading all that. With your experience, I’m certain you’ll do well. khhhhhhht. 10-4, good buddy. :smiley:

pride: I know 3dsmax can do it, but I’m learning Blender right now. Does it support this? If so that might be something for him to look into… and, it’s free! You could actually buy the car now instead. :wink:

I do not think that Blender alone will work without Z in that respect. What I am doing lately heavily relies on the saved subd levels from Z, so I can decide which level of detail I export to which manufacturing step… But after the Z export, heck yes, blender would be fine. However, I like to use the 99$ Viacad which allows me a more CAD approach which is useful for some other processes I engage. Beveling in Punch’s ViaCad is the finest I found, even better than Rhino4…

It Looks like I have some homework ahead of me. Thanks for the info and leads. Right now I’m going to stick to learning the basics (learning the lingo) and getting acquainted with the workings of the ZBrush itself :eek:- don’t want to get ahead of myself, but with your info I got something to look forward to. . . .
