Monster Job Hunter

Here’s a monster character I’ve been working on for the guys at Horseback Salad Entertainment. He’s for a short film they’re working on that will be live action with this cg monster composited into it.

I still have to finish some face armor for him as well as make some thick, slimy drool (because every good monster has it). Those with the eagle eye might also notice that his genital area looks a bit unfinished. He’s supposed to have a belt type thing with some type of material hanging from it to cover up that area.

The base mesh was modeled in Lightwave, rigging was done in Maya, and rendering in Lightwave using Fprime and G2 with post work in Photoshop. The model was at about 2.5 million triangles in Zbrush but the Lightwave rendering is only at 500,000 triangles.MonsterZpostBackView01.jpgMonsterZpostFrontView02.jpgMonsterZpostFrontView01c.jpgicon5.jpg

He looks very mean, cool, and very bloody. Very nice sculpt…Irally like the skin you put on as well.

…so, your aiming for realism, eh !:)…in that case his upperbody mass seems to put a lot of strain on his tiny knee’s…cool looking model :+1:

jantim

Sorta cool, reminds me of the ‘Spawn’ era critters. Jantim may be right, unless he’s just posturing in that pose and actually walks like a dog, ten he could get away with the smaller hind legs. Then again, he’s a monster, what do we really know?

I think he’s done. Very cool monster! Reminds me of Tim Burton’s work. I wouldn’t mess with his legs, the interplay between massive bulk and tiny legs is entertaining. It worked for Mr. Incredible in the Incredibles. The more realistic you go, the less impressive he will appear. 5 stars from me, at this stage. I don’t think he needs armor either, his skin looks pretty tough anyway.

I really like it, the style is a nice mix of realism (well, I know it’s a monster but still…) and cartoony. Any chance of an untextured render?

wonderful work. Very nice design and render. Five stars

Thanks for the comments!

Jantim - No, I don’t think I will be making the genitals, just might bring back the cloth. He’s a alien monster after all, and we all know that aliens don’t have genitals!

On the subject of the small legs, we wanted to keep some stylization to him and decided on the small legs despite the fact that he probably can’t really support his weight with them. I do see him walking around gorilla-style supporting his weight with those long arms.

Here’s some renders from Zbrush using the Antropus clay shader.

And here’s one of the base mesh in Maya before the Zbrushing started and with the faceplate.

Finally, here’s a wireframe shot of the base mesh in Lightwave.

Very Cool model and VERY nice sculpting 5 points from me :+1: :+1: :+1: :+1: :+1:
Would you Mind telling us how you made those lovely 'winkles’?
Thanks in advance

Brilliant model!!! Just amazing! Great job. :+1:

Very fierce nightmare character. Kudos for a terrific sculpt!

I watched the animatic for your animation. Overall its pretty good, kind of odd to publicly see it before the production is finished. It was a tad bit long, the whole part at home wasn’t really necessary to the story, I think. The wife doesn’t seem to be that important and I’m not sure about what happened in the ending.

Thanks again for the comments!

AndreZz - for the wrinkles I used the deco brush in projection mode to carve them out then used inflate, pinch, and smooth to finish them off.

womball - I’ll pass your comments on to the guys at HBS. I’m sure they want to hear some feedback from others. I do agree that having the animatic posted gives away the surprise at the end before it is completed. In the end, I think what happens is that what he thought was going to be a job interview ended up being a interview for a monster hunter and those guys were evaluating him from behind a one way mirror fish tank.

Here’s a couple more renders I made of this guy as I test out the weighting and jaw open morph. I think you can get a better sense of the characters cartoony stylization in these pics. There’s no deformers on the rig yet, just straight smooth binding. Works pretty well as is, but will probably have to add something to get his pectoral muscles to pull back with his arms.

Great work! Congrats! Nice renders…Let us know when the short is done, It will be cool to see your monster in action.

Posting a little update for this project. Now working on animating the shots and have some test renders to post. This is part of a anim where the monster is finishing “hatching” from a dead body. Animated in Maya and rendered in Lightwave using Fprime.
