monster from my student short film

hi all,

here's a first pass at a monster character from my grad film its going to have eyes that are sewn up and will probably have zombie-like movement any critiques and comments are very much appreciated will post more soon thanks ![monster_Test_Front01.jpg|699x1200](upload://2kfw4pR8C3M16vv91o6qCaMjdCR.jpeg)

looking good, keep going! So whats the story on your film, and where do you study?

nice one, i like it! tho with that physique hed be moving more athletic than a dead decaying corpse! keep it up

you will work more for the body and others part, I guess.
the face is nice work

Hi Zindrome!

I really like were you going with this character. I see that you’re studying the human anatomy and thats great! On the other hand, I think the only thing that looks like monster it’s the long neck and the face.

It doesn’t have a nice blending from the human body into a big change of the neck and face.

Another thing is, that the design of the face looks a little chartoony compared to a more realistic human body. It reminds of Barraka from Mortal Kombat! Always sketch your design first before working on the computer! It’s very helpful!

Other things that you should have in mind are: What kind of monster is he? Is he a reptile looking monster? Where he comes from and what is his background. Maybe you could explain a little more about the story!

Great work with your anatomy study! You got the forms and proportions very well sculpted. The only mayor thing is, that the character doesn’t look too believable at the moment. Play around with the proportions of the body, maybe it look better with a wider and bigger upper body, you can also trying adding some deformations to the body or maybe a bigger body on one side!

Other than, great work!

Keep it up!

Javier.

Thanks very much for the comments guys

Chris - Im studying animation at Emily Carr Institute… its in vancouver

The film has a big twist in its story but its basically borrowing from the language of video games where a soldier is roaming a labirynth or maze killing these monsters…
cant reveal more than that for now … hehe

PedramK - Thank you very much for the kind words
and true… with a muscular build like that … it would probably have a more athletic movement associated with it… im trying to fix that with this next iteration

Hehehe - Thanks and yes the body esp the hands and feet need tonnes more work

Javier - Thanks very much for the comments. It was very much insightful. After reading it I really kicked myself in the head for not doing a proper concept phase for it. Its mostly cos of a time constraint but thats no excuse. I had a previous iteration based on a rough concept… but at that time i was really not comfortable with zbrush. I was trying to kill two birds with one stone with this monster… doing an anatomy study and a monster which clearly doesnt work … hehe
the face does look a lot like he’s really happy hehe but it mite work in the context of the film

for the moment ive gone and improvised … making him more monster like
please do let me know what u guys think
Ive got a long way to go before i can call this done so any crits would be awesome
thanks again

cracking sculpt so far mate! really good. im off to VFS in febuary to do VFX! cant wait! anyway as for the movement. have a look at the movie “pans labyrinth”. it has a wonderful monster in that along the same lines as yours. but its also got a shambling gate. this is given to it by the baggy skin hanging off its bones. i havent been scared by monsters in movies for ages and that was the first one to give me a shiver! good luck!! Henry

Nice sculpting. :+1: Maybe putting him into a monstrous posture would help bring out his character more and give you ideas where to go with him.
