Monitors - CRT Vs....everything else.

The general rule of thumb is that a CRT can still display a better image than most of the newer flat/thin monitors that are out there now. (unless you spend some major bucks)

But, have any of you went shopping for a new CRT? They are nearly non-exsitant in retail stores, and even online shopping they are the absolute minority. 2-3 years from now, I believe there won’t be any new CRT’s to buy!

So…if you had even $500 bucks to spend, what new non-CRT type of monitor would you buy? Or…would you still opt to buy a CRT?

Btw, for myself, tabletop real estate is not important, being able to view the best color-accurate quality image, is! (From time to time, I need to make graphics that will go out to professional printing houses)

If I were to take a stroll through the Gnomon school, what non-CRT monitors would you think I would see them using?

I not only mention this becasue I want to upgrade from my standard 17" monitor, but I had watched that recent Meats video interview, and saw he had (three) Dell LCD type of monitors on his desk. (the 20" model?)

Just thinking out loud. Any opinions?

CRT is DEAD! And… I challenge every CRT to show me the crisp pic of an LCD. If you don’t want crisp… then you need a CRT. If you wish flicker, fatigue, and a color/illumination stability from hell then use a CRT. My LCD’s do not drift compared to an CRT which will change considerably over the first couple of hours. And they are bulky. I took two guy’s to throw my old 20 Inch CRT into the dumpster. Now I rent that space to a family of four.

PS:There are quite a few color colibrated LCD’s on the market. No idea what is good…

If you weren’t going to buy another, then what LCD’s do you already own?

I actually have no complaints about the “flicker, fatigue, and a color/illumination stability” with my current CRT. And, its just a basic mainstream market model.

-My current CRT refresh rate is 85 Hertz, so no flicker, no fatigue (I’ve sometimes stared at it for up to 12 hours a day, lol - no headache)

-The stability of the color/illumination of the CRT; Any CRT, including even a CRT livingroom TV, will need to be turned on for at least an hour before the color levels out. They’ve always been like that, so no suprise there for me.

-Bulky? I could care less. I’m not moving it around. Not important to me.

BUT…not to knock thin monitors. They be sexy, and cool. I would love to get one, and obviously sooner or later, will…as I also agree with you…CRT’s are basically just dead.

Yet, yes…I may have to spend extra bucks so I can be able to get an LCD type of monitor that can (at least) have a 1280x1024 resolution, with an 85 Hertz refresh, and be color correctable with a calibrator (Spyder type)

i had the confirmation that CRT were dead, when i asked in a pc shop about a 19 or more CRT with good resolution/refresh and they looked at me just like an alien. also they searched for some and they found a 19 model on philips website. it was the only CRT model they still produced

i’ll have to change my monitor really soon, as i still have an old CRT 17 at 1024 x 768 and my eyes are really stressed from it (have to say that my eyes are unfortunately sick however) and i’'ll go straight for a good LCD , a samsung or whatever good one with at least 1280 x 1200 res. LCD don’t flicker , cause they have a different technology, and i think that, calibrating the monitor correctly i’ll have zero probs with colors.

What you want is the highest contrast ratio you can afford and a viewing angle of 170. I’m using a ViewSonic 800:1 and I calibrate with a Spyder 2 Pro. I saw one with a 650:1 contrast the other day for $350 but I have not been in a store with the higher end ones lately. I paid $800 for mine but that was a while ago. I think they are cheaper now. You might find one for $500. With an LCD you only need to calibrate once in a blue moon rather than weekly with a CRT. The older LCD’s were not suitable but the newer ones are excelent. I use a CRT as a second monitor and my eyes can’t tell the difference in color. The LCD is much easier on the eyes though. My focal range is exactly the distance to my monitor now and I think that is a price we pay for sitting in front of these things all day. I use a 19 inch because its the right size when I place it at my focal distance. Plasma has the best color and contrast ratio (up to 18,000:1 I think) but they have too many issues. They burn in ghosts and they don’t last long. I think that is why they seem to be disappearing from the market. Even the TV’s appear to have a short life span. I bought a big LCD TV last Christmas and the salesman showed me a one year old Panasonic Plasma that had ghosts burnt in just from sitting in the display for 6 months. He talked like they are not selling well.

Wha!?

After buying a very cheap Mikomi Combi Telly/monitor, I wouldn’t have a CRT monitor ever again. It has multiple SCART connectors and I’ve got everything plugged into it. It’s much less hassle than a telly or a CRT monitor, not to mention superior visually and aesthetically.

Why do you want a bulky inferior viewing experience? The only plus I can think of is the price. CRT monitors are dirt cheap now. I have two 19" CRT monitors gathering dust in the spare room. I cannot even give them away, and beleive me, I’ve tried!

That’s some of the insight I was looking for.

I too have heard about bad ghost burning with plasma’s. My buddy is a cable tv installer, tells me of people who have them and keep those news channels on all day that have scrolling tickers at the bottom, which have been burnt in after 6-12 months.

Viewsonic. I have always liked their monitors. I’ve looked at their site and they have a Pro Series, 19" LCD which has a viewing angle of 170, Ratio 1000:1, and all the other stuff I want for $350. Or, A 20" version for $500.

So, that looks like where I’ll focus when I upgrade.

Thanks everybody for your responses!

Wise decision mate  You’ll never look back. Only downside to LCD (and plasma screens, so I’ve heard) is that they cant take any knocks.
For instance, just say some idiot mate of yours throws you something (I’ll mention no names!) and it hits your spanking new LCD screen? Well goodbye LCD screen

A CRT screen could take some punishment, up to a point anyways!
Just treat it with a bit more care and you’ll be fine.

After my little mishap, which was ages ago now, I took my LCD screen back and told them it was faulty  Instant replacement

Yeah, I don’t particularly mind my current CRT…the bulk doesn’t truly matter, it’s sitting on a deep desk…but the need to upgrade to a 19"-20" screen, that’s more important. Then I want to start color correcting, which had me thinking I needed to research LCD’s.

No worries about the monitor being knocked. Worst scenario I’ll have is keeping the fur from my girlfriends cat away from it.

I bought a 22" widescreen Chimei a few weeks ago for $570 bucks. Great value and the quality isn’t too shabby either (only if you use DVI). 1650x1080 resolution =D

Agent Smith - Its all your fault. After this thread I went shopping and was surprised at how low the prices have gone :+1:

I ended up getting a wide screen as a second monitor and I love it. Thanks for posting about the prices.

Rofl…it’s all getting cheap as of late. We’ll all eventually be rolling in large LCD monitors and dual core 64 cpu’s, I swear.

Yup, I got two Viewsonic 1680x1050… Decadent! My Mac Laptop is also widescreen. Nice as well. My other PC has a 1280x1024 LCD and when I have to work on that… I am constantly running out of screen space, start stacking dozens of windows and the frame has dents from the mouse pointer trying to reach the next county… ;-).

The only thing I reallly hate is the fact that we actually gave comfot up fr the wide screen format. All documents look like hell in full screen. My PC Laptop can switch 90 degrees. So I usually have it sit on the side on the desktop with an externl keyboard to read manuals as the wide screens just are not comfortable for full page display. I can;t wait till we have the 4000x2000 screens. Then… there is nothing to nag left. Won’t happen you think? Just wait!.

At Siggraph Sony showed their 4K thatre screen projector of and some CG pics were shown in that resolution. 6 People had to carry me out there…

PS:Does anyone have a recommendation (based on experience) regarding a color calibration tool which actually works?
