Two questions involving the organic geometry shown below:

I started this in mud box but am re-doing from scratch in Zbrush –
How can I create these really round, snake-like objects that push into each other? My strategy was to carve out the general shapes and then use the bulge tool to swell them and then retopo, but if you look at the first picture towards the bottom, you’ll notice you can see through the cracks in the wrinkles, so it seems clear the original artist created the bulges as separate pieces that were then merged together? What’s going on? Some sort of curve to tube mesh? How do they all join together, as many specific details as possible would help.

Second question:
I tried to flatten two of the wrinkles into one smooth shape, but the crease between them stays, no matter what tools I use, how can I add clay or flatten in a way that joins the wrinkles?
