I have been asked many times why I haven’t gone into the film or game business with creature modeling. My response has been that I just don’t have the reel to show for it yet and it’s hard to have a day job to find the time to put one together. Plus, I need a more good models to show. But lately I’ve been considering investigating what it would take to get into character concept modeling. My question is if you model a creature/character concept for a film or game, is that same person expected to create the lower poly model for animating in the game or film?
Basically, I’m trying to figure out what should go into my reel IF I decide move on this and create one. Should it concentrate on polished finished character sculpt concepts that may have some rudimentary animation that wouldn’t require retopoing, or should it include examples of fully retopod low poly meshes as well? My focus would be on concept modeling so I’m wondering what a proper concept modeler’s reel would contain.
