Model goes weird when i divide

Hey guys, im modeling a character is maya, and i attempted to bring him into Zbrush yesterday. When i import the mesh its fine, but as soon as i subdivide it it goes all weird. Once i divide it even the lowest divide looks weird.

Here is a picture of the model when i import it in.

And here is a picture as soon as a start dividing it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for all the help guys it means alot.

Hey Rambo…I’m having exactly the same problem as you and can’t seem to find an answer.
Even tried going back to maya, deleting all the history on the mesh because that usually works- then re-importing my object but still have the same result.
Theinteresting thing is that if i subdivide the geometry with “Smt” ( smoothing) off, it divides without those strange streaks but looks awful.
Help.

Hey Clare, im not sure if this will work for you but this is how i fixed it. I brought my model back into Maya. When i exported it from Maya i didnt have it directly Centered on all the axis. After centering it completly then importing it back into Zbrush all my problems seemed to Disapear. I also centered the pivot point. Hope this Helps.

Another thing to try is scaling your model. Use Tool>Deformation>Scale at a value of 100 (double size) or -50 (half size). One of the two directions should improve the results (in which case you’d go farther) or resolve the problem.

Aah, Rambo your suggestion helped!!
but I had to take it one step further because it still wasn’t working. My model is posed in Maya based on a doll character, so it was a little off axis to start with.
After centering the pivot point in Maya, I had to Modify/Freeze Transformations, export my body .obj, then viola! it subdivided beautifully in zBrush. I’m not rigging the model, just trying detailing it, so it was an easy fix… Have no idea why I didn’t think of it before.

Aurick: Thanks for the suggestion cos I’m sure it will come in handy at some point.
