Model goes black after performing 'UV check'

Hello, I’m having issues with the uvs of my model. When I click ‘New from UV check’ I am shown greyed out UV’s. When I click polypaint from uv’s and add some painting detail, and then click ‘New from polypaint’ the model stays black although the texture map is shown as having the polypaint detail.
The UV’s are not flipped, I’ve checked. I can’t work out this problem, please help.
