This is my first post to this community, so first off Hi! This is my first real model that I intended for zbrush. I am still learning the program as I go. I decided to start modeling again, and begain on a character I recently concepted. A post apoc minigunner dude. I wanted something to show some anatomy since that is where my interests lay when modeling.
I really like it so far, excited to see how it turns out, especially with that gun! And your drawings are very nice as well, you got some talent man, once you do learn those little tricks for zbrush there will be no stoppin ya!
love the concept!
does he smoke via that gas mask?
firstly, i love the concept! very nice
Concerning tricks, i can suggest that you dont go that high rez so quickly, your shape isn’t working in many area (pinching and form not quiet there yet).you should firslty try to capture the overall form of your model and use each subdiv for that.very important to get it right on level 2, then passing on level 3 etc…I found it helpfull to store a morph target before going one subdive higher, then call it back and keep sharpned forms i like with the morph tool.work on the body on its own firstly, get it right…then build from it the rest of your charcater.
hope to see more!
Abe
killer concept drawing man. i have to second what abe was saying. it’ll save you a lot of time and frustration if you have a little patience and build your model gradually through the levels. Push one level as far as you think you can and only THEN, step up and subdivide.
After a couple years of using this program, I’m only recently seeing the great benefits of working this way. I had an art teacher that always said something like “you can’t put up pretty wallpaper without a wall to put it on.”
Keep going—can’t wait to see more!

Thanks, I hope to get more fluent in it. I would love to take more of my concepts the sculpture route.
Leshiy3D:
Yes, he rigged up a gas mask so that even in the polluted atmosphere, he can smoke and still filter out the toxins outside. There is a filter on the cig mount as well.
abe_Tamazir:
Ahh, yea that makes sense, thanks! I got pretty eager with the torso and wanted to start sculpting the muscles. What is a morph target?
industripop:
Thanks! hehe yea, I guess for the initial part of zbrushing, I am going to have to restrain myself from jumping right in. I’ll keep this in mind. I find myself going back in and working it out one level at a time, just seperating my attention into specific areas. Perhaps I should try to work it all out overall.
Welcome to the wonderful world of ZBrush. Great concept and drawing technique. It looks like your getting into the swing of things pretty quickly. I don’t want to beat a dead horse, but I triple what was said earlier about detailing. Also, I’d suggest adding very basic boots and going ahead with the posing stage. Transpose will really help you bring the character to life very easily and quickly, much faster than rigging in an external package. I have found that, however, after using transpose you can almost always expect to have to do some serious reconstructive sculpting. Better to do it early on instead of worrying about fixing details too. Again good start, and THANK you for NOT doing another Troll/Orc.
Lovely concept, keep to post!
Bye
Sorry no new pic to update. Most of the work has been under the hood type stuff. I am learning how to do all this junk as I go, and I am hitting roadblock after roadblock. I have just finished UVing the torso, and reimporting it (good amount of problems there, but successfully got it) and started a ghetto texture. I am currently running into issues with the belts, and pouches around his waist. So if anyone has a chance to read through, and knows the answer, please reply.
1.) What is a good way to handle belts, pouches, and such?
2.) When working in z-brush, it is ideal to have leakfree geo, correct? What about the geo that you will never see (the inside of a belt, kneepad, etc)
3.) For small knick-knacks and details is it better to model them? or is there a ideal way to normal map them.
4.) When you retopologize your geo, is there a way to preserve subdivision details?
Sorry for the question frenzy, just a few things floating around my mind that might help clear up some things. I am looking forward to posting more progress when the ball starts rolling again
Thank you all.

Thanks, will do.
Here is some more progress, not sure if I am going about this correctly, just kinda plowing through it. The pants boots and gloves are going to need some serious attention soon.
I have to say that your sketch is amazing and really really beautiful. Welcome to Zbrush and i am sure you will soon get to grips with it. The model development is looking good so far appart from one thing that hits me straight away and that is the muscles of the back, as the rest is looking fine.

Arran J Lewis
P.S. i done a bit of a drawing on the back to give you an idea, i hope you dont mind.
