miniature set building how to's

Looking for links to articles and titles of books on miniature set building for films. Google is not turning up anything on the how to - scales to use etc.
Any good forums for miniature set builders?
Thanks
SpaceMan

Heyas Spaceman…I dont know anything about this fine craft of building and working with miniatures other than what I have seen on television…I did a search on ask.com and this is the link to my search…it appears to have some stuff about it. Go to the production diary at Kong is King and use the Navigation dropdown to look for entries to do with miniatures (four I think).

The extended LOTR DVDs also have some extras to do with miniatures - can’t remember how much detail though.

I wonder how much is done by hand these days v.s. CG.

Ron thanks

Bonecradle could not get any of the qtime movies to play - I’ll try agaion latter.
Thanks for the link and I have the exstended vers of the LOTRs - I’ll go through them

billrobertson42 - don’t really know.

I found one link and posting it in case someone else is interested

I found a copy of the book Special Effects - Wire, Tape and Rubber Band Style by L. B. Abbott, ASC
on page 41 is a table of some scales to use and the frames per sec to film them in - example 1/8 is 68 frames per sec . to give realism to the miniature.

@billrobertson42 It’s up for grabs, have you seen Alias’s new F/R page? I did good. For our newer friends, CG will always be more expensive…CG Details cost $$$$$$$, real modeling is always cheaper.

As Bonecradle has mentioned there is a dvd set out
now by Peter Jackson, detailing the making of King Kong.
Two disc set that is basicallly a repeat of what was on the
site for a period of time.
Over a few hours there are a number of references to what you
are looking for.
Two things, it is obvious from the content and the date issued the
“good stuff” will be held back until the movies"dvd release.
So if you can, rent it…
Also the extended dvd of lotr return of the king has quite a long
feature by the same people on the same subjects ( scaling, etc.)

Do you have a link sirquadalot?

Bonecradle and bicc39 got the extented ver of ROTK - disc 3 Desigining and Building Middle-earth > Big-atures feature. Mentions some scales used but not the orginal size of the structures except Minas Tirith.

That was the type of information I was thinking of.
Believe this type of thing is on all three movies.
Same with the movie about Zippy the Chimp ( kong)
Sorry this is not the type of information you need.
In reading your original thread, see that this is inadequate.
One suggestion might be to contact Gnormon. They might be able
to direct you further, they are great people and have been most
helpful.
Sounds like a question they might be able to help with.
Sorry I was no help.
Luck.

bicc39 the disc 3 was a help as it gave the real size (about 1/3 of a mile) of Minas Tirith and then the scale they used for the miniature set:+1:

Really like the Big-atures feature:sunglasses:

CultTVman’s Ultimate Modeling Guide to Classic Sci-Fi Movies (Paperback)
by Steve Iverson, Anthony Taylor
did a search under modelmakers came up with things like this.

Also, asked advice.
"Extremely hard field to get into.
No “craftschool” perse.
Not much “steady work”
Too many people, too little work.
“Who you know”

I was depressed listening to it and I don’t want the job.

Not being sarcastic, but don’t quit the day job.

Yeah!
