micropoly Renderer suggestions needed..

Anyone that has any suggestions in regards to micropoly displacement renderers just post them here… I am currently using Cinema and since it doesn’t take advantage of this technology I’m looking to find an alternative. I’ve seen stuff done with Air, any Pro’s, Con’s etc to this program or any other…

I’m sure Lightwave does it

Final Render does this but i think it only works with Max…

*8

actually lightwave doesnt do micropolygon displacement. you have to do the subdivisions before rendering, and if you were to subdivide until each polygon was a pixel big, youd get no feedback from the application at all. ( if your machine has even enough ram )

newtek is apparantely trying to fix that though either for LW8 or 9. but i speculate itll happen for 9.

one for max you might want to check out is Vray. i think all renderman based renderers have it too, but dont hold me to it.

You also have Poser 5’s Firefly render engine which is based on…? Pusghetty has the info on that.

I sure wish Newtek gets Displacement rendering in place for lightwave 8. Just plonked down the cash for a 6.5 to 8 upgrade a month ago.

my bust, LW doesn’t do like stated above here is some better info:

Micropolygon Displacement renderers:

  • PRMan and most RenderMan compliant renderers (Air, Pixie, 3Delight, etc)
  • Mental Ray
  • Houdini VMantra

Non-Micropolygon Displacement Renderers:

  • Lightwave
  • Maya Base Renderer
  • Max Base Renderer
  • uh, others (check your docs)

Also for the Renderman route, this looks like some good stuff:

Renderman Academy

Well currently I"m using Cinema and I know it doesn’t support this. I guess Air is the one I’m going to tryout and it’s a reasonable price, at least the student version…
