Mesh stuck in itself and stretched out while using bend curve

I tried to bend a cylinder to achieve an effect like this (done by dragging the topmost point):

But mine got stuck in itself and is not smooth at all:

I increased both HDivide and VDivide, but nothing worked. Just wonder if anyone can help me out? Many thanks!

I figured our! Because my smoothness is set to 0.5, when I set it to 1 I got what I wanted!
