Mesh border shrink behaviour when subdividing

Hello there,

I’m stuck with an issue I can’t fix and I hope you guys will be able to help me out.
After importing a mesh in ZBrush (an open mesh actually, as a cup let’s say) when I subdivide it (with smooth on) the border edges shrink. An issue I don’t have with Maya’s smooth mesh preview, even if I don’t have any support edges at the borders they don’t shrink.
I tried to set a morphTarget on my lowest sudbdivision level (at import) and switch to it a few times, it reduces the shrinking behaviour but doesn’t get rid of it entirely. I also tried to insert support edges close to these borders when I’m modeling in Maya, when I do this the model seems to almost doesn’t shrink when I import it and subdivide it in ZBrush, which is what I want. At last I tried to crease the lowest subdivision level but it doesn’t have the effect I want.

Can ZBrush smooth my mesh as Maya’s smooth mesh preview does ? With no shrinking effect ?

Thank you for your help.

before subdividing.
tool.geometry.crease
this adds the extra support edge to avoid the smoothing at open edges.
you can remove this with tool.geometry.uncrease (might need to hold shift during the uncrease…dont remember)

Hello,

As I said in my first post, I already tried using Crease. I made an image with explanations to make my point more clear (see the attachment).
It seems the last technique used behave better, so the issue is mostly based on modeling more than a ZBrush issue, you have to know ZBrush will create these gaps and deal with it inside your external 3d editor. This is quite inconvenient if you have hundreds of meshes and want to import them inside ZBrush.
I also read in the ZBrush doc that smoothing algorithm of other 3d packages is propietary so the guys at Pixologic can’t use it in ZBrush, is this right ?
