Memory Error when using groups loops...

Hi there, ok so I’m working on a model thats 11.5mil polys - it’s a shark kinda thing, I polypainted the teeth a different colour so i could make the model as 2 polygroups (body and teeth) so would be easier for the texturing. Once I’d done that I go to click on the groups loops button and it crashes with a memory error saying it cant continue etc, I’ve got 8gb ram so this cant be the issue :confused: In the mem settings I’ve got compact mem set to max 4096 and in the bar at the top it says around 3700 free.

The only way I can get it to work is if i change loops to 0 but then polish smooths everything out and destroys all the surface detail, if I turn polish to 0 theres no different at all, trying loops at 1 just makes it crash again. Really dont know what to do now, could this be a bug?

Also is there a way to set the max compact mem higher than 4096, still got plenty more memory for zbrush to use!

What is your MaxPolysPerMesh value set to? One thing I’m thinking is that if your model has a lot of polygroups then using GroupsLoops could be increasing the polygon count above what the MaxPolysPerMesh value allows.

If that’s not the case, then we’ll need step-by-step instructions to try and duplicate this.

Thanks for the reply :slight_smile: I’ve tried the maxpolycount at max 50mil and makes no difference. When do you click the Compact Now button? is that when you make a change to the memory settings?

The extra polygons it would be creating would probably be under a few hundred thousand as I made the teeth from masking and moving upwards so theres not a lot of resolution there.

As for a step-by-step…

  1. group visible (to make one polygroup)

  2. group from polypaint (I painted the teeth red the body white)

  3. del lower subd history

  4. group loops, loops = 1, polish = 0, triangle = enabled

  5. crash!

and if I click groups from polypaint more than a few times it’ll crash aswell
