Maya -> UVs -> ZBrush or Maya -> ZBrush -> UVs?

What is the sequence you follow? Maya -> UVs -> ZBrush or Maya -> ZBrush -> UVs?
(or any 3D Package other than Maya)

If the overall shape is made in the 3D Package, and ZBrush adds plenty of details would you have the UVs done before or after ZBrush sculpting (Dynamesh + sculpting + noise + ZRemesher).

It doesn’t matter when UVs are done.
Our workflow is pretty open now.

That being said, if you’re distorting your UVs while you’re modeling then you’ll probably need to redo your UVs.
Most people work for what suits their needs.

Personally I use this workflow.


  1. model everything (zbrush, modo, etc)
  2. Lowpoly everything
  3. UV
  4. Bake
  5. Texture
  6. ???
  7. Profit.

But it really comes down to your pipeline, output, etc.
If you have to use premodeled and UVd geometry then you can’t really use that, but for items coming from scratch this is usually a good workflow as you get to break apart the tech and the art.
